I have some serious questions about this particular incident as well.

Something doesn't feel right.....

Although interesting sentiments, the letter was first posted at BLACKFIVE Blog listed as written by a "David C" supposedly from 3/4. This one sounds odd especially if I am to believe that the MGYSGT(ret) supposed received it from a "Classmate from the Naval Academy".

I hadn't heard about the Marine being shot in the back of the head; only a soldier possibly named Maupin who was taken a couple of months ago.

Anyway, I think it wouldn't change the way most service members fell about giving these dirtbags a whupping.

Utah Marine On 'Unauthorized Absence' Before Turning Up Missing

Jun 29, 2004 9:27 am US/Mountain

Marine Corps officials are expected to visit the family of a US Marine apparently being held hostage in Iraq again today.

Wassef Ali Hassoun has been seen on an Arab satellite television network, blindfolded and held captive by a militant group which is threatening to behead him if the US military does not release all prisoners in Iraq.

The US military says Hassoun went ``on an unauthorized absence'' June 19 and did not report for duty the next day. Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt says based on his personal situation, there was reason to suspect he was headed to Lebanon.

A family friend and spokesman would not comment on Hassoun's status and says Hassoun's family is asking all the people in the world to pray for his safe release.

It's a nice rant; even nicer if we grew the will to turn our guys loose.

You don't get it ... they will take care of business you (meaning the media nad the general public) will NEVER know it ... and they will NOT ask for permission

As I said in my comment #1 I received it from a Marine Segeant Major (active duty). In reading the message, one can see by the changes in writing style that it was forwarded through at least two people before it came to me.

You have the original author (I'm inclined to believe a full name rather than a blog handle but that's personal preference) writing the sentiments, then someone else saying they got it from a one of their Naval Academy classmates. If it sounded odd to you that means you know that Master Sergeants don't have Naval Academy classmates.

It's a nice rant, with no guts to back it up.

The Marines in Iraq don't dare to seek vengeance. When they were ready at Fallujah, they were pulled back. When they are ready to avenge a Marine death, they'll be called way back and told to behave.

If any individual Marine dares to go ahead and seek revenge, he will be court-martialed, like the Army guys at Abu Graibh.

This is a politically correct war.

This is not WW2. This is not 1944.

Unfortunately.

I've noticed that several other freepers have similar doubts as well. May I share a few observations:

1. If this Corporal had been abducted without anyone witnessing the event, wouldn't he still be listed as UA?

2. I assume the Marines are an extremely close-knit group. SI would think that somebody in his unit would know if Corporal Ali Hassoun was the deserter type. I don't think the author of this awesome note would mention him by name if there was any doubt about his loyality.

BlueLancer, do you have a copy of the original?

I'd sure like to put it on my FR home page, with accompanying sources of course.

I remember seeing that on the day you posted it but by the time I went back to the thread to find it the post had been pulled.
