Oppenheimer and his really really bright frenz all had a helluva time making one simple bomb work under very controlled conditions. Now imagine if they packaged one up, gave Richard Reid strict training on how to set it off, and then sent him on his way in a container ship/mexico-border-crossing semi......am I convinced al-Qaeda has enough brainiacs to pull one off, much less 40 without being detected and punked?

It's no secret the US Government has been concerned about radiation devices as a weapon, but that is very different than 20-40 tactical (10 kiloton) nukes. I'm not convinced the terrorist have any nuclear bombs.

I am convinced that the terrorist read US media reports to learn of creative ways to harm America. Books like "Osama's Revenge: The Next 9-11" will only guarantee the next attack will be more spectacular and devastating than the last one.

York and Lancaster are both target-rich, as is Harrisburg. The goal of terrorists is to terrorize; therefore, they may not hit "military" targets, but civilian population centers. Because they want to terrorize the entire population, they don't hit the largest cities all of the time. If they could do so, they'd break the backbone of our economy: farming, especially corn and soybean farmers whose product literally has fueled the people of this continent for a millennium.

But farmers are generally well-armed (although this may vary from state to state) and dispersed through vast swaths of the countryside. Look at the war zones in around the world, particularly in Africa. Who are the refugees? Rural farmers, unable to protect themselves from the murder, rape, and pillage of roving bands of thugs. Who suffers? Everyone, including city-dwellers, who no longer have a reliable source of food.

If there were nukes in the US in October of 2001, they were certainly here on September 11, 2001. Why did they bother using airplanes?

In the last month or so I have been hearing here in Southeast Asia that ~

What I found even more interesting is that this time around it is not solely a 'militant muslim' operation that has been being developed. The individuals who financed and worked on the project here were 3 Chinese, 2 Indonesians, 1 Arab and a Dutch passport holder who is now dead. - They met regularly at two hotels I am aware of - one in Medan and the other in Jakarta.

Three of the nukes moved through Southeast Asia over a year ago and were ultimately destined for the United States (origin was Vladivastok). They had a total of 6 Russians come in and 2 stayed on and did some "work" on the parts (I am not sure exactly what they were doing) - Their liason is an individual in the Embassy of the Russian Federation who happens to have a Filipina girl he sleeps with that also sleeps with someone I know.

NEST is Nuclear Emergency Search Team, or at least it was a few years ago. I've seen articles on them.

Does the tinfoil come with the book, or do we need to supply our own? If the author knows how many nukes are here why can't he give their locations. Did he count them to know the number present in country?

The first time I heard this theory, more than a decade ago, the nukes had supposedly been smuggled into the US by the Soviet Union and buried outside major cities, to be dug up, armed and detonated by Soviet agents when they were ordered to do so. After the Soviet Union fell, the exact location of the buried nukes became hazy, and some of them could have indeed been sold to terrorists. But it was also speculated that the fissile material was only good for a few years and that the weapons may now be useless in any event.

If they are doing that, then they are idiots. Taking a risk on being caught just so that they can wait for a convention? Ridiculous. Just detonating it would be a major victory for them. They can't even blow off a conventional bomb, though.

Mind you, I am not suggesting that we should not be worried about the terrorists getting the a-bomb. It' just the notion that they have got bombs here and are waiting for the right moment that I find ridiculous.

Regardless of the expiration date, risk of getting caught, etc... remember, no one thought a terrorist would use a plane as a missle either.

Isn't it quite possible they are counting on us to NOT believe it is possible? After 9-11, I say anything is possible with a crazed terrorist.

Two things about that: 9/11 happened on 9/11 because that is when the assets could be put in place. There were delays. It might have happened sooner. No significance to the date.

The second thing is it took years to plan 9/11 and the Cole bombing, the latter of which was delayed for something like a year due to the right ships not being in the right place.

Not really possible to say one way or the other. You can't say "It would have happened already." And you can't count on numerology.

Only fancy nukes, like neutron bombs, need fancy maintenence. A uranium or plutonium fission bomb has a looong shelf-life.

Yes, I thought of that. However, I still think it's unlikely. It's unlikely that they currently have any bombs, much less several, and even more unlikely that they are simply sitting in the US waiting for the signal.

Keep in mind that even Iran does not have the bomb at this point. Of course, I do not rule out the possibility that al Qaeda might be able to do something Iran cannot. However, I do look at the odds. I'm more worried about Iran giving the bomb to al Qaeda than I am that al Qaeda will get the bomb on its own.
