The defense will make him out to be a nut and the jury has already heard that the detective didn't put much stock in it because of the timing and lack of corroboration.

Every bit of rumor and gossip broadcast, written and on the internet will be used as a way he could have made it up...Best to just let it sit there?

Maybe. But perhaps they could just call the guy in and quickly let the jury see and hear him. Jurors can't ask for what they want in these cases. And heaven help the lawyer who fails to give them the information they think they need!
