Chemical Munitions Found by Polish Soldiers in Iraq Date Back to 1980s

WARSAW, Poland (AP) - Warheads believed to contain the deadly nerve agent cyclosarin that were found by Polish troops in Iraq date back to Saddam Hussein's war with Iran in the 1980s, authorities said Friday.

"Beyond any doubt, the warheads date back to 1980-88 and were used against the Kurds and in the Iraqi-Iranian war," said a statement from the Polish command.

Last month, Polish troops in south-central Iraq recovered 17 rockets for a Soviet-era launcher and two mortar rounds filled with chemical substances, said Lt. Col. Robert Strzelecki, a spokesman for the Polish-led force, in a telephone interview from Iraq.

"Laboratory tests showed the presence in them of cyclosarin, a very toxic gas, five times stronger than sarin and five times more durable," multinational force commander Gen. Mieczyslaw Bieniek told Poland's TVN24 at the force's Camp Babylon headquarters.

"If these warheads, which were still usable, were used on a military base like Camp Babylon, they would have caused unforeseeable damage," Bieniek said.

The tests were done by American experts in the United States and Iraq and are still ongoing.

The munitions were found in a bunker in the Polish sector.

In May, an artillery shell apparently filled with the sarin nerve agent was discovered at the side of the road in Baghdad by U.S. forces. Officials at the time stopped short of claiming the munition was definite evidence of a large weapons stockpile in prewar Iraq or evidence of recent production by Saddam's regime.

Gotta keep raisin' that bar! I Guess we will need to find a vast stockpile, with a note that says: "Manufactured in March 2003. For use against Americans in the continental US."

Once we find that sort of evidence, the major media outlets might accept it, but until then ... the jury must still be out on the whole WMD issue.

Well, I made a comment on another thread that seem to be nice to repeat here...
That's right. The several missiles could only kill about 300,000 people, so it isn't, technically, a weapon of mass destruction.

Funny. It seemed like when only 3,000 people died on the streets of New York, a building in DC, and in the fields of Pennsylvania, it seemed like a whole helluva lot of destruction.

So, yeah, 100xs as many that died on 9/11...nah, nothing to be concerned about there.

</sarcasm>
So, yeah, it's just a "little" cyclosarin, nothing to be concerned about.

I don't believe the AP believed this was a story until the details came out that these were old weapons. Did the AP report the story when the weapons were first found? I only recall seeing the story on places like newsmax.

Emphases mine.

No, the Associated Press is not involved in shaping the public debate leading up to the election. They're journalists; they just report.

I just don't think this would sway your average liberal.

What difference does it make when they were manufactured?

They are there and they aren't supposed to be.

And there will be more found.

We didn't find any WMD. They were never there. The UN was right.
Oh, wait. We found one shell, but that's it.
Ok, we found a second one. But no stockpile.
Ok, we found a dozen more, but it isn't a LARGE stockpile. Oh, and it's old. So there.
Bush said there were LARGE stockpiles!! Bush lied!!

Most if not all of our own nuclear weapons date back that far as well. Does that mean we don't really have them? Does that mean they don't count? Does that mean it's old news move on???????????

"Beyond any doubt, the warheads date back to 1980-88 and were used against the Kurds and in the Iraqi-Iranian war," said a statement from the Polish command.

Factually false. These warheads were not used, which is why they were still available for use. They are similar to ones which were used. They were not used.

I guess since they were from the 1980s, that they wouldn't kill anyone?

The AP is depressing. They make it sound like Saddam is a choirboy who wouldn't possibly want to keep around any deadly weapons.

Good grief! Thats as old as some of the canned goods in my pantry. Does that make them more toxic or less toxic? (I know what age does to a can of sardines.)

I know you're probably being sarcastic here, but let's not forget to hammer home the point to the Dems, the fence-sitters, etc., that the war was fought on Iraq's "capacity to possess" WMD (the actual wording of the congressional war resolution), and its failure to account for the WMD that Hussein inventoried after the first Gulf War. The Bush administration is under no obligation to prove the existence of WMD, "stockpiles" of WMD, or post-Gulf War WMD. It was Hussein who had the responsibility to prove their destruction. The Dems and media will try to spin this the way you say they will, but its up to us Americans to stop them in their tracks and put the lie to their lie!
