and then there was that wonderful Lyndon Johnson who won a US Senate seat in 1948 by 48 votes.

Starr county in south Texas emptied it's cemetary that day.

The last hundred odd votes in Duval County were all for "Landslide Lyndon" and cast in alphabetical order.

Starr county in south Texas emptied it's cemetary that day.

My mom, who was born in Starr County, recalls that Johnson would swoop in on his helicopter (rare in those days) in a schoolyard during election season to make his deals with the local powerbrokers. This was to assure that certain vote quotas would be achieved. My late grandmother, who passed away in 1987, was fond of Reagan, but it's entirely possible that she voted for Dukakis, Clinton, Gore, and will vote for Kerry.

I had the pleasure of being in Starr County during the 2002 primary. (I had voted early in Houston.) At one polling place, there was a single line to vote as there were no Republicans for county office. Outside the polling places were various tents of various candidates, all with the wonderful aroma of fajitas grilling. Once you voted Dem, you got to eat. I think they had almost two dozen Republicans out of about 30k registered in this year's primary -- making big strides!
