My Grandad used to tell stories about the thirties and the days of paper ballots, when the first guy to vote would stuff a dummy vote in the box then smuggle out the real ballot, then head straight for the union hall and get his free whiskey, as stooge #2 took possession of the ballot (filled out for the Democratic nominee) and re-entered the polling place. This went on all day.
I witnessed the "Florida Effect" in California. I work at the polling place. The 5pm rush is always the biggest of the day. But not in Nov 2000.
The networks had called Gore the statistical winner, so untold thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands nationwide , felt their votes to be meaningless.
They drove home instead of to the polls.

Thanks for the "PING"
The socialists a.k.a. Democrats, will be working hard to spoil these elections coming up --- originally, in order to force us into a government by judiciary, yet especially now, more to make the U.S. voting system look foolish before the eyes of the Iraqis.
When election time comes, you can bet that the liberal media networks will be interviewing Iraqis for the purpose of repeating any and all demoralization of the democratic-republican process.
Especially given they made the same mistake for Bush 1, incorrectly calling FL.
In the private/responsible world there would have been immediate firings. The lack of firings following a repeat error only indicates that those in charge got the "error" they wanted.
