Gays in Schools Still Feel Isolated, Teachers Eye Ways to Help Staff, Youths

Washington --- The sixth-grade boy with a crush on silver-haired Mona Mendoza came up to her after the physical education class at a Seattle middle school and told her, ''Miss Mendoza, I have a problem. I hear you are a lesbian.''

''Well, I am,'' she recalled telling him.

''But, Miss Mendoza, my dad told me that if you were a lesbian, you'd be fired.''

''If I lived in some places, that would be true. But not in Seattle, because it's in our contract,'' she replied. ''Yes, I am a teacher, and yes, I am a lesbian.''

That drew smiles from the teachers at a workshop here on how to improve the education and safety of lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual staff, students and their supporters, especially those who are also racial or ethnic minorities, or poor.

Then Mendoza sobered her listeners: ''They actually pulled him from my class, and then his dad finally transferred him to another school.''

The workshop was one of three on sexual orientation and gender identity sponsored by the 2.7 million-member National Education Association (NEA), the country's largest union for teachers and other school staff, in connection with its annual meeting, which will end Wednesday.

The legal protections in public schools for those who are not exclusively heterosexual in practice or appearance are stronger than ever.

But the teachers said everyday life in many public schools hasn't been changed much by the partial protection offered by federal bans on sex discrimination in employment and education, or by court rulings in cases under the ''equal protection'' clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Only eight states have school safety laws that forbid discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, according to a study released this week by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. Bias laws in few states

The states are Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin and three others --- California, Minnesota and New Jersey --- that also offer protections based on gender identity or expression.

''At the other extreme, seven states still have prohibitions on the positive portrayal of homosexuality in the schools,'' said J. Carlos Velazquez, director of programs for Llego: the National Latina/o Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Organization. The states are Alabama, Arizona, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Utah.

One teacher said that during a school dispute over a gay-themed book at her school, ''I was afraid that if I stood up for the librarian, people might think I was a lesbian.''

Another teacher asked: "Is coming out really all that important?''

''Yes, it is very important to the kids who have two moms or two dads,'' Mendoza assured him. ''And it's good for our own mental health. How would you feel if you couldn't bring your wife to a faculty party, or put a photo of your kids on your desk?'' Snubs, losses recalled

An older gay teacher reviewed his lifelong history of snubs, beatings, school rumors, missed promotion opportunities and loss of friends to AIDS. He said the workshops' lack of emphasis upon the problems of white men stimulated ''anger inside my heart.''

The workshops sound like ''a great idea,'' said 18-year-old Bryant Courtney of Flowery Branch, Ga., who graduated from high school in May and plans to enter Georgia State University in the fall.

''A lot of educators just aren't well-educated on these issues,'' Courtney said. ''It's too late for me, but I'm glad to see it's happening.''

His mother, Jeanette Courtney-Cross, said he mentioned his orientation to her four years ago, and he confirmed that he was gay after he was outed by a teacher in whom he had confided. The teacher was reprimanded and left at the end of the year for other reasons, she said.

''Teenagers are going to make fun of each other, but the n-word has passed out of common use when others refer to African-Americans,'' Courtney said.

Yet some teachers who would crack down on racist or sexist insults remained silent, he said, when ''I was called a faggot in the middle of class, or someone would refer to a faggot or say 'That's so gay' in my presence.''

Ah, but that's the point. The homosexuals are no longer content to keep their perversions to themselves. They want the rest of society to accept them. The author could have written an identical article supporting polygamy or beastiality. For example:

"Another teacher asked: "Is coming out really all that important?''

''Yes, it is very important to the kids who have dads in love with sheep,'' Mendoza assured him. ''And it's good for our own mental health. How would you feel if you couldn't bring your sheep to a faculty party, or put a photo of your sheep on your desk?''"

A rather disgusting example, but I think I made my point. It doesn't take a scientist to recognize same-sex relationships are unnatural. Honestly, people have all sorts of urges and temptations, but that doesn't mean those urges are normal or beneficial to society or themselves.

The "bullying in the schools" issue is a ruse used by GLSEN to gain access to the schools. Bogus statistics on "homosexual youth" suicide were used (and are still being used) by queer activists to get government officals to cough up taxpayer money for so-called "safe schools" programs, which are actually pro-homosexual propaganda programs. Documented here:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1026551/posts?page=270#270

An excerpt from "New Study Indicates Gays and Lesbians Prone To Psychological Symptoms and Substance Abuse -- But School Harassment Rates Not Higher for Gay Males"

"But bullying at school, the study noted, was reported no more often by gay men than by heterosexual men. Reports that gay men and lesbians are disproportionately vulnerable to school harassment "are often taken at face value," the researchers noted, with researchers failing to draw a comparison to heterosexual students, who--at least in this study--were found to suffer similar high rates of school bullying and harassment..."

Peter LaBarbera was spot on when he said "You can protect all children from abuse without enacting pro-gay policies. But what GLSEN does is use efforts to stop bullying as a Trojan horse to promote their real agenda, which is to teach the acceptance of homosexuality and transgenderism in schools." Consider the following:

No Name Calling Week to be March 1-5th; Thousands of Schools to Participate

"The No Name-Calling Week Coalition today announced local and national plans for its inaugural No Name-Calling Week project. During the week of March 1 - 5, 2004, thousands of middle schools from around the country will take part in a week of educational activities aimed at ending name-calling and verbal bullying of all kinds. To date, over 3,500 school administrators and educators from all 50 states have come on board for participation in the week’s events with hundreds more signing up each week...

About No Name-Calling Week

No Name-Calling Week, to be observed March 1 - 5, 2004, is a project of the No Name-Calling Week Coalition, created by GLSEN and Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing in collaboration with over forty national organizations... "

Given GLSEN's past, any program created by GLSEN should be suspect. This shift in strategy by GLSEN is yet another ruse to get access to the schools. It's GLSEN's latest Trojan horse. Does anyone seriously think that any GLSEN program will be "fair and balanced"? ( check your answer here ).

No, GLSEN's only concern is about how they can frame an issue in order to forward their agenda.

GAY OR STRAIGHT: IT'S STILL HARASSMENT

"Four of the six girls facing expulsion are from the Turner Middle School, at 59th Street and Baltimore Avenue, in West Philadelphia, where a group of girls who self identify as "dykes taking over" have allegedly sexually harassed other girls.

At Simon Gratz, a group called the "Lipstick Gang" has been accused of recruiting straight girls into a lesbian lifestyle. Clashes between groups of openly gay and straight girls have erupted.

In Fayetteville, North Carolina, where my oldest granddaughter goes to high school, the so-called DTO group has become increasingly assertive..."

Do you think this will be addressed in GLSEN's "No Name Calling Week?" Or that we'll see Kevin Jennings expressing his outrage over this abusive behavior on his web site?

Why don't the council the kids to stop defining themselves as a sexual lifestyle and shift to a self view as a student, or a member of society? That doesn't even require them to change their lifestyle, just to not make it the only thing they ARE.

Meanwhile the terms fatso, geek, nerd, metal-mouth, and four-eyes are all perfectly acceptable to the pro-homosexual left. Never see a single article that protects these groups as singular interest groups. even "virgins" are considered freaks by the advocates of the "sex positive agenda".

Heck, the media has signed onboard to attack the obese in this country. Too much fast food, too wealthy a nation, too little exercise, eating meat...

"You feel isolated? I've had my eye on you. Why don't you come over to my place later for some 'counseling'?"

Many homosexuals' first experience was seduction by an older partner.

Or, to be scatalogical about it, I often have to crap. I do it regularly. It's healthy and natural. But I don't do it in public and, except for this post, I don't go around talking about it!

If the "gay" radical activists (and remind me again of how the vast majority of homosexuals just want to quietly live their lives in peace and don't support the homosexual agenda...) hadn't shoved themselves and their orientation and their demands in our faces, down our throats, and into our kids' minds in schools, I wouldn't have anything to say about them.

Except maybe Tsk, tsk once in a while.

They're the ones making a big public deal out of same sex sodomy, not conservatives.

Bullying and abuse of any kind should be discouraged in schools. No kid should feel threatened or unsafe in school. I'm not exactly pro-gay, but anti-gay slurs like 'faggot' are especially painful, whether or not the target of such a slur really is gay.

If the public schools can't maintain discipline, it's time for home schooling or private schools.

They will not be happy until 1. there is a homosexual sex break rooom/lounge for conjugal breaks AND 2. homosexual teachers and staff get to "hands on" train children in the "art" of homosexual sex AND last participation in numbers 1 and 2 are manditory regardless of parental consent.
