Hatch: Senate Supports Stem Cell Research

Sun Jul 4, 5:18 PM ET Add Politics - AP to My Yahoo!

WASHINGTON - Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Republican supporter of embryonic stem cell research, said Sunday there is wide support in the Senate to ease the Bush administration's restrictive policy.

Hatch said supporters have more than the 60 votes needed to end a filibuster, but he's unsure whether Congress would act "in this hot political atmosphere."

The Utah senator predicted on CNN's "Late Edition" that the administration and supporters of the research would reach a compromise that would include moral and ethical standards set by the National Institutes of Health (news - web sites).

"That has to be done, or we're going to have a mess on our hands all over the world," Hatch said.

He predicted countries around the world would follow NIH standards, including a ban on cloning.

Hatch was among 58 senators earlier this month who signed a letter to the president asking him to relax restrictions on federal financing of embryonic stem cell research.

Long before her husband's death, former first lady Nancy Reagan supported the research. She said cells from embryos could lead to cures for the Alzheimer's disease (news - web sites) that afflicted Ronald Reagan (news - web sites), along with other illnesses.

"I personally believe that in the end the president and those who are in the administration will see that," Hatch said. "And we need to support this. Nancy Reagan happens to be right on this."

Bush signed an executive order in August 2001 that limited federal help to financing stem cell research on 78 embryonic stem cell lines then in existence. Because day-old embryos are destroyed when stem cells are extracted, the process is opposed by some conservatives who link it to abortion.

I would support stem cell research in the Senate as well. Let's start by pithing Sen. Hatch and sucking out his brain...

Probably he or a loved one has been diagnosed with alzheimers or Parkinsons or (you fill in the blank). There is so much evidence indicating adult stem cells are better. What a terrible pity.

Maybe a letter to the president and the Senators with tens of thousands of signatures from "We the People" advocating adult stem cell research would effectively counter Hatch's campaign.

Everybody should support "stem cell research".
It's the "embryonic" part that is sickening.

Please see post #5.

Is there ANYTHING Republican at ALL which Orrin Hatch supports? What exactly does the Liberal Mafia have on this guy? It must be real, real bad to be able to blackmail him so well.

Garbage in, garbage out. Hatch is a sissy and has been for years. He's a fine case study in why we need term limits for senators. 12 years is about right.

America should not risk losing its formidable edge in biotechnology over this issue. I can't see where it is going to help Bush get re-elected either. I hope they work out some kind of compromise and get it off the front page.

President Bush has only done one thing regarding stem cell research .. HE STOPPED FUNDING FROM THE GOVERNMENT.

If public groups want to fund it .. there is no law prohibiting it. I don't see what all the fuss is about. The dems want it .. then let all their elite rich people fund it.

Question: Does anyone know anything about cells in the umbilical cord? Are they useful for the same things stem cells are?
