More Dutch troops for Afghanistan
Radio Netherlands ^ | July 5 2004

A large majority of the Dutch parliament has approved the deployment of between 120 and 150 extra troops in Afghanistan. Only the Socialist Party opposed the move. The house was initially concerned about the safety of the Dutch soldiers, but Defence Minister Henk Kamp said that, in case of emergency, they would have the support of US troops in nearby bases.

Their task is to restore peace to the province of Baghlan, where there are still regular clashes between local warlords. The soldiers will leave for northern Afghanistan in mid-September for a one-year tour of duty.

Parliament will decide later today whether the six Dutch airforce Apache helicopters will stay on in Kabul. Their assignment ends in September.

The Dutch are very good people. They may not make the best warriors, but they are okay otherwise.

If you haven't ever been to Amsterdam, go.

Some 150 Dutch peacekeepers are already actively taking part in the International Security Assistance Force around the Afghan capital Kabul.

I think that they had much more soldiers in Afghanistan.
In last year they commanded ISAF together with Germany, so they should have had at least... 1.500 soldiers I think.

I know but I think that they had at least as many in Afghanistan in 2003. Maybe they removed them from Afghanistan and sent to Iraq.
