A Personal Take on Bill Clinton’s Book Tour (Fawning Adulation by a Berkeley FOB)
Berkeley Daily Planet ^ | July 2, 2004 | Paul Parish

I had dinner with Bill Clinton this week, a good friend for the last 36 years—though he’s always been better than me about keeping in touch.

When he lost his fight for re-election after his first term as governor of Arkansas, he paid me a visit here in Berkeley—and while we were hanging out, he showed me the apartment building on Derby near College Avenue where he stayed one summer.

He sent me a whole lot of Beethoven when I passed my Ph.D. orals at UC, and later, he invited me to his first presidential inauguration. He was a great help when my father was dying.

During his terms in the White House, I wrote him a lot of long letters. He’d write back within a week (a short letter, half of it typed, half a P.S. in longhand). Over those eight years, a group of us old friends would get together with him whenever he’d be in town.

The man’s got a great heart, and it really bothers me when his critics say he’s insincere, that he really doesn’t care about people. I’ve never known anyone who cares so much about people…and he’s been that way since I first met him in 1968 when we were Rhodes Scholars in the same class at Oxford.

His political gift is like a great singer’s—it’s a talent, a gift for people. He wasn’t a radical in the ‘60s, nor later. Basically, he’s a Fullbright-style progressive populist, born of rural America.

The tradition starts with Andrew Jackson and it’s Southern. Elvis is an artist in that tradition. What Bill had, and still has is that earthy, humble-folks emotional penetration. He really gets it how people feel, how groups of people feel, and why their leaders take the positions they do.

Bubba spent a summer in Bezerkeley (I wonder why), but he's no 60s radical, no sir. The writer comes across as incredibly naive and, oh my, the hero worship borders on the bizarre:

I discovered someone who’s powerfully intuitive and hugely intelligent—he reads as much as any intellectual, but he’s really a man of action. The thing that’s hard to believe is how much energy he has—all kinds of energy, stamina like an ox [it's the cocaine, Paul] — but most of all, his heart is big and generous, and people respond to him in kind.

Not to worry - we all know that BC will not be remembered for any of this pap. In fact, we know exactly what his legacy is and always will be. He's a lying male slut.

Curiously, not all socialists are as enamored of Blubba's epic tome:

My Life is an extraordinary book that should be read and reread by every socialist. Of course, we mean My Life by the Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky. My Life by Bill Clinton, on the other hand, is a pompous piece of junk — lies and distortions served up with Clinton's teary-eyed smile, rather than trademark snarl that we're used to from George Bush.

Since starting the whirlwind publicity tour to promote his autobiography, Clinton has done his best to seem high-minded. He claims to be interested in the “big issues” he faced while in the White House — the Middle East, Kosova, health care. But predictably, the headlines about Clinton revolve around the sex scandal that almost drove him from the White House.

No interview or talk show appearance was complete without a sombre Clinton recounting how sorry he is for his affair with Monica Lewinsky. This from a man who had the gall to lecture single mothers living in poverty about “morality” and “family values”.

But consensual sex in the Oval Office wasn't a crime. Bill Clinton's real crime was his part in Corporate America's war on working people and the poor. His real crime was to continue the US genocide against the Iraqi people with an eight-year-long string of military attacks and a devastating economic blockade. His real crime was to leave behind a trail of broken promises on all of the programs or stands he promised to take in defence of unions, women's rights, gays and lesbians, civil rights for African Americans, and on and on. More blather from GreenLeft.

Someone who actually stood in line for a Clinton booksigning in Los Angeles writes:

5:20pm

He’s finally here.

The mob freaked out when Clinton’s car rolled into the garage. Even though they’re going to see him in an hour in person, people flocked to the curb in a vain attempt to see a shadow behind the tinted windows.

The funniest part of the arrival has been the transformation of the ladies in line around us. I came here knowing that I’d look like a complete mess after standing in line for 12 hours. I guess I didn’t have a cogent enough battle plan, because some of the women in front of us disappeared for twenty minutes only to return completely decked out. One woman looked like she’d just rolled out of bed until 4:45 – sweats, no make-up, bored, shiftless look on her face. Come time to meet Slick Willy? Belly shirt, push-up bra, jeans that’d make an anorexic feel challenged. It’s funny that all these chicks want to doll themselves up and try and flirt with the president when they’re not his type. By that I mean they’re actually attractive.

I’ll give one woman credit – she stood there all day in a low cut evening gown and 3-inch heels and talked about little else than flashing Clinton or showing off her ass. That’s dedication. link to article

Some people believed that Paul Parrish's homosexuality would cripple Bill Clinton, only to learn that sexuality would be the benchmark of his presidency. The gays in the military push that came at the beginning of his first term was a reward to that constituency.

Now I know the predictions in the Bible can actually happen - The ones about people adoring and worshiping the Antichrist.

I'm still trying to remember when Clinton supposedly spent a summer in Berkeley. This is the first I've heard of it, which makes it even less publicized than his trip(s) to Moscow. Does anyone know the story behind this? Was he there just for the dope, or something else? (I'm pinging you, DFU, as an expert on x42 shenanigans).

Sen. Hillary Clinton shared this bit of information in her own memoirs, which came out last year:

" ... I had one strange encounter at a small restaurant in Berkeley. I was supposed to meet Bill, but I was held up at work and arrived late. There was no sign of him, and I asked the waiter if he had seen a man of his description. A customer sitting nearby spoke up, saying, 'He was here for a long time reading, and I started talking to him about books. I don't know his name, but he's going to be president someday."
