Professor Killed In Front Of Ocala Police Station

POSTED: 9:14 am EDT July 6, 2004 UPDATED: 9:27 am EDT July 6, 2004

OCALA, Fla. -- Investigators said a Central Florida Community College professor was fatally shot in front of an unstaffed police department headquarters by her husband. He fled and later took his own life.

Debra Allen Vazquez had been arguing with her husband, Jose, near a Wal-Mart Supercenter Sunday. When she drove away with the couple's 8-month-old granddaughter in her car, her husband followed her in his pickup truck and started to ram her car to get her to stop.

Debra Vazquez drove to the Ocala Police Department headquarters to get help, but the police station was unstaffed at the time.

Witnesses and investigators said her husband shot her outside the car and dragged her body to the side of the building and left. The baby girl was unharmed and was later taken home by her parents.

Ocala police say 12 officers were on duty Sunday, but some of them were helping set up a perimeter to catch a person wanted on a drug warrant and others were responding to different calls.

I think this is absolutely horrible. Where is one to go for help if not the actual cop shop!!! Maybe she should have gone to the Tax Assessors office. She would have had the same help.

Radio stations were open over the holiday. They are staffed 24/7 if on the air for 24/7. I smell a BIG lawsuit.

Maybe Ocala is a small town? They had twelve officers in the field on July 4th.

How 'bout just reaching into your waistband for that concealed weapon? The police arrive just in time to tape off the area & take photo's of the body.

Police have what is called indemnification, which means they can't be sued for not getting there in "time".

Protection is YOUR job.

Most police departments are unstaffed at night and weekends. You might get lucky if you can catch an officer in the building.
Ours has a 24/7 civilian dispatch center so the person could be 'buzzed' into the lobby. But at night and weekends, there would be a slight chance at best to catch an officer in the building writing reports. Except at the beginning and end of shifts.

The taxpayers have insisted that officers be on the road answering calls and being visible. Heaven forbid that someone might be taking a break.

There is no lawsuit culpability in this situation. There is no personal promise made to this person, therefore no specific requirement for security and her safety. Now, if she was on a cell phone and someone said to drive to the police department and she would be safe...now that is a lawsuit.

Ocala is not a small town and has hundreds of officers on its force. This ain't Mayberry. Old Sheriff Taylor would have saved this woman. The side of Ocala Police cars says "To protect and serve". Obviously they are just words.

Catching Johnny smoking a joint is a such a great priority, or prosecuting Rush Limbaugh for buying Oxycontin is such a big deal to the survival of the Republic.

She should have gone to the local Post Office.
Her husband wouldn't have been allowed to take his gun in there.
There are signs that say so.

No, the morons were rushing to FR to post their worn out knee-jerk anti-cop crap.

I'm just surprised that none of ya'll have yet blamed this on the WOD. Must be a holiday...

I agree that was her biggest downfall was not carrying a gun (concealed or otherwise). I am also a strong beleiver in weapons. A small .22 handgun saved me from a man trying to take me and my car about 20 years ago in a crowded grocery store parking lot. It's a 357 Model 66 solid stainless steel that protects me now. An armed society is a polite society.

Ah yes, I spoke to soon, dopeheads never miss a chance to bash the police.

It is all about the dope, nothing else matters in life, just access to dope.

of course, we will have some freepers defending this guy...we usuallly do find excuse makers....

but wasn't this killer a piece of work?

ramming the car where the little grandchild was, and then shooting the woman in front of the baby and dragging the woman off....

and then, of course, the cowardly act of commiting suicide, what a man!
