John Edwards

U.S. Senator (D-North Carolina) Born: June 10, 1953 Birthplace: Seneca, S.C.

A Democratic senator from North Carolina since 1999, he began his career as a trial attorney. Among his achievements are co-authoring the Patients' Bill of Rights; and writing bioterrorism and port security measures that were passed by the Senate. The son of a mill worker, Edwards was the first in his family to attend college. A talented lawyer, Edwards won millions of dollars for his clients in trials against large corporations. Despite his self-portrayal as a lawyer who “fights for the little guy,” Edwards did no pro bono work or civil rights litigation when he was a trial lawyer. The death of his 16 year-old son Wade in 1996 propelled him to begin a political career. Married to Elizabeth and has three children, Catharine, Emma Claire, and Jack.

The Senate can be very cruel to Jr. Senators.

It really is an old man's club.

Very few lawyers do any significant pro bono work. Pro bono is something for movies and television lawyers. Sometimes they write off bad debts and call it charity--If you want to know which lawyer does real charity work in your community, you'd have to research the charities themselves and see who is on retainer. Those are often the genuine probonos--but they manage to collect a fee here and there, too.

As for civil rights litigations, many people are unaware that when the ACLU wins a case, they collect "reasonable and customary" fees from the loser. It's written into statute somewhere. The ACLU likes to pretend that the lawyers it HIRES work for free. Of course, when the defendant wins, that defendant gets no money. Great racket? Designed by lawyers like Breck Girl and his lovely wife, Elizabutt.
