As others watched, a 19-year-old from Oak Forest ran into the water at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, swam out about 150 to 200 feet into Lake Michigan and saved the life of a struggling teenager.

"I was seeing him wave his arms, and everyone was just looking at him," Dave Garbe said of the 15-year-old boy, who was on an outing Thursday with others from the Mercy Home for Boys in Chicago.

The boy was in the water at the park's Kemil Beach in Beverly Shores, Ind.

"Help me, sir; help me!" was what Garbe recalled hearing after swimming out to get him.

The rescued teen, whose name wasn't released, never lost consciousness, park ranger Bill Tadych said. The boy was treated for shock and given oxygen.

Jessica Maynard, 17, of Crestwood, a friend who was with Garbe, also headed into the water but didn't think she could bring the struggling boy in. Seeing Garbe, she said she thought, "Thank God he's coming because I'm not going to get this guy.' "

Though an experienced swimmer, Garbe struggled to get the youth ashore.

"It was pretty rough fighting the waves," said Garbe, who got a merit badge for swimming while in the Boy Scouts and was on the Palos Heights High School swim team for two years. "He had a cramp, so he couldn't swim."

The lake bottom can be tricky, said Bruce Rowe, spokesman for the national lakeshore, who said it can drop off suddenly and "is always changing. There have been times I've seen people walk out that distance and not been above their heads."

When the radical leftists succeed in destroying the Boy Scouts, kids like this will drown.

You are absolutely correct. This young man represents duty and honor. Duty and honor are alien traits that leftists will never understand. Leftists are self-centered and believe in three tenets - Me! Me! Me!

We can feel assured for the future that young men like this are coming up behind us.

How right you are. And the deeper problem is, they think that's a good thing. They hate everyone, from themselves to some kid they don't even know, who is swimming and sinking is some lake somewhere.

'Too bad the Scouts are not "worthy" of public funding since the left considers them to be a menace to society and its values.

Not a boy.

When will you figure out that boys never grow up, and a Boy Scout is like a Marine. You can depend on what he has learned!

The left has a perverted idea of what America is and an even more perverted idea of what America should be.

The leftist response would have, at best, been to call 911, i.e., the government handles things better than the private sector.

Ok, ok :'). I just meant that a man was in the water and the boys were on the shore watching.
