Spin Boldak, Afghanistan - A Taliban commander was killed when guerrillas attacked Afghan government security forces near the Pakistani border on Saturday, and militants also burnt down a United States-built school, officials said.
A spate of guerrilla attacks hit the south of Afghanistan even as authorities announced an October 9 date for a landmark presidential election which the Taliban have vowed to derail.
Up to 40 guerrillas attacked two government checkpoints in a village northeast of the border town of Spin Boldak early on Saturday, said Abdul Razzaq, commander of border security forces.
He said a Taliban commander, Mullah Abdul Hayee, was killed.
"His body is with us," he told Reuters adding that three Taliban fighters were wounded, one of them seriously, while no government men were killed.
But a military commander in the area, Lal Jan, said four government men were killed in the clash.
In another incident overnight, suspected Taliban guerrillas burned down a boys' school in the province of Kandahar that had recently been built by US soldiers from the 20 000-strong US-led force hunting the Taliban and their allies.
The school in Maywand district was destroyed, but there were no casualties, said Kandahar corps commander Khan Mohammad Khan.
In another raid, Taliban guerrillas attacked two military posts in neighbouring Helmand province, district spokesperson Wali Mohammad said. Three guerrillas and three government soldiers were wounded in the Friday clash, he said.
And in the southern province of Zabul on Saturday, a government militia man was wounded when provincial forces attacked a Taliban position to successfully free 15 village elders detained by the guerrillas in its Mizan district.
Taliban spokespeople said earlier the guerrillas were planning to put the detainees on trial for backing the government.
Afghan officials have long complained that the Taliban have been able to sustain their insurgency since overthrow by US-led forces in late 2001 because they have been able to find sanctuary in Pakistan - even though Pakistan is a key ally in the US-led war on Islamic militancy.
The UN-Afghan election body said on Friday that long-awaited presidential polls would be held next month, but parliamentary polls would be delayed until April.
The Taliban and allied militants have vowed to disrupt what are billed as Afghanistan's first ever free vote.
The US-backed government had hoped to hold both elections in June, but logistical problems and lack of security in the south and east forced a delay.
Militants have killed several election workers in recent weeks and, in the worst attack, 16 bus passengers found carrying voter registration cards were shot dead.
Wacked another military commander....pretty soon the Talibunnies will need to dip into the minor league..
The only defense against such unreason is offense. Islam should be expunged.
It seems like these mullahs grow like weeds - there are always a few more around.
Rebuild the school, get the boys to help and when it's burned down again they will know exactly who to blame.
The madrassas are pumping out new Mohammedan psycho killers every day.
Mohammedan psychos want schools that only teach Koran memorization and recitation. Spewing out Koran verses is the height of intellectual achievement for them.
Got another one..
I just wish we would be able to kill them faster and more efficiently.

One less piece of filth soiling our planet.
Well Said!
I wish more people understood it.
There is no way the Islamist movement will ever be civilized...
A "scorched earth" crusade against Islam is years overdue...
On TV I saw some footage of a Pakistani madrassa for poor and orphaned boys. The 9 year old boys wore a white smock and white Mohammedan beanie. They were rocking back and forth (looking catatonic) as they recited Koran verses. Some held books and read the verses. Some looked like they couldn't read but were reciting what they had memorized via verbal repetition. The Koran is memorized by many Mohammedans. It's shorter than the Bible or just the Old Testament
The teachers (forgot how to spell the teacher's title) expect the Koran TO BE MEMORIZED by the time the boys are 9 or 10. The rocking motion while learning is to help them concentrate. (From a very old book).
Interesting info since we are at war with the Jihadists. Thanks.
"The Arab Mind" by Raphael Patai is being read by a lot in our military. It was written 20 years ago
I thought it should have started when the Khomeini-ites captured our embassy in Iran. Or before ...
What's Richard the Lionhearted up to these days?
You are so right! Unless some self cleansing method is instilled, American chemotherapy will be needed again and again.
I MEAN A VERY OLD BOOK..circa 1850. It is more or less a diary of several trips through the middle east by an historian. It's just a wonnderful series. He was called "dog" at one point, bartered over goods, visited the historic sites...but the most interesting part was about Mohammed the prophet and his intent to conquer the tribes and the world. There is a beautiful steel plate of one of his followers entitled "With a sword in one hand and the Koran in the Other".
I say instead of sending these little jihadi fockers to Gitmo (in which the American Bar association would like to turn into club med for terrorists)we take the captured and make them work in a chain gang to rebuild any of the schools or government buildings they destroy.
