SRINAGAR, India (Reuters) - Suspected Muslim guerrillas sliced off the nose, ears and tongue of a 14-year-old girl in Indian Kashmir on Sunday, believing her to be an informer for the Indian army, police said.

Mariam Begum was abducted by a group of militants from her house in Doda district south of Srinagar, Kashmir's summer capital.

"The abductee was let off by the terrorists. However her ears, nose and tongue have been chopped off," a police spokesman said.

Rebels have in the past killed or maimed people who they believe are helping Indian soldiers put down the 15-year revolt in the Himalayan region.

Elsewhere in Kashmir, 16 Muslim rebels and four soldiers were killed in separate gun battles over the weekend as rebel violence mounted despite peace moves by India and Pakistan.

More than 100 people have been killed and scores wounded this month alone.

Authorities say the violence could be aimed at disrupting talks between India and Pakistan who agreed last month to serious and sustained negotiations for a final settlement of their dispute in Kashmir.

I am soooooo sick of this "religion of peace." Islam means "submission, which says everything anyone needs to know about this cult of death and mayhem.

There's that word again!

The word that drives me friggin' nuts is not militants, but insurgents.

Bush's cat India gets Indians enraged

Man, you upset a couple of people and they write the story like Geaorge Bush got one billion people mad, and note the use of the word "enraged."Angry youths in this Kerala capital Friday burnt an effigy of US President George W. Bush, not because they are anti-American but because he has named his cat India.

How many angry youths, I wonder...2, 3, 10, 100 maybe...?

M.A. Latheef, president of the group

Hmmmmm. Now if i get 2 other people to go chant with me, and call myself the president of the group, maybe some idiot will cover me in the newspaper.

The members of the group walked to the front gate of the assembly building but were stopped by police.

Well there weren't that damn many of them, were there?

After a brief speech and some slogans, the members burnt an effigy of the US president.

Sounds like they almost rioted. Thankfully, they were sated after burning an effigy, so that they didn't go on a rampage and destroy the city of Kerala.

On a side note, I have noticed a distinct decrease in the use of the word "enraged" to describe events in Iraq and elsewhere. I bet the media people started to realize that you eventually reach a rage level of infinity and you can't be any more enraged. So day after day of stories of the Arab world being enraged finally got old.

Thanks for the comments. I read the article on FR; someone else posted it. However, I thought it made interesting reading. My whole point was that the Indians could protest on something more important than a trivial matter like the name of Bush's cat.

BFD. Some nuts protest something trivial. Try applying your "logic" to American protests sometimes.

America comes off as as totally trivial minded and nutty.

Plus, if they want to protest, they can. No law against it.
