'Oldest' dog heads for 27th birthday [Eats kangaroo and emu]
The Guardian ^ | July 12, 2004 | David Fickling

An Australian mongrel fed on kangaroo and emu could be the oldest dog in the world. A vet in the outback town of Wilcannia has established that Jerry, a red heeler-bull terrier cross, will make it to 189 dog years when he hits 27 in August. Dogs rarely live past their 15th birthday, but Jerry shows little sign of fragility beyond some arthritis and worn teeth. "He is a remarkably solid dog for his age and has not got that wasted look that animals and old people get," the town's RSPCA vet, Honey Nelson, told the Melbourne Herald Sun.

"I think it's partly genetic, but also because he's a fit, roo-hunting dog who used to catch a lot of emu and roo. He could push on to 28."

The oldest dog on record was an Australian cattle dog named Bluey, who died in 1939 at the age of 29.

Jerry's owners, Aboriginal leader Waddie Smith and his wife Aileen, said he was a gentle creature who had never fathered pups.

"Everyone in Wilcannia knows him because he's never hurt anyone, although he does not like cats in the yard - they're his one enemy," said Mr Smith.

"He means a lot to me. He still comes for a bush walk with me. I take him nearly every night and he jumps up and wants to grab me on the arm like when he was younger."

Meat eaters

If cats could take down a roo, they'd live to 50.

I recall someone once saying that "Life begins with the last child leaves home, and the last dog dies." I sure hope our dog doesn't live to be 27.

My wifes mutt lived to 18! Though I think the dog died about 12 and the fleas just moved it around the house for the next 6 years.

Emu on the left, roo on the right.

If you, or the cat, are interested. Corn rat can be substituted for the roo and emu if unavailable.

Kangaroo steak with Bush Tomato Chilli Sauce

Ingredients:

4 x 200g Kangaroo Saddle Fillets (desinued)
100gm Puff Pastry
2 Spring Onions
100gm Red OchreÆ Bush Tomato Chilli Sauce
500ml Beef or Kangaroo stock
1 level dsp RO Ground Bush Tomato
1 tsp Sesame seeds

METHOD:
Slice the tops of the spring onions diagonally very finely. Keep in ice water for garnishing the dish. Slice the white part of the spring onion and then chop finely.

Roll out the puff pastry to a rectangle 8-10 cm wide and approximately 15 cm long.

Spread thinly 1 tspn (30gm) of Red OchreÆ Bush Tomato Chilli Sauce and then sprinkle with chopped spring onion. Roll up length ways in a spiral to result in a "sausage" shape approximately 5 cm in diameter.

Freeze for 30 minutes to firm up and then slice into 8 pinwheels.

Place on silicone paper (Glad Bake) and bake at 170 degrees Celsius for approximately 15 minutes - keep warm.

Grill or pan-sear the kangaroo and keep rare.

Rest in a warm spot for 10 minutes.

For the glaze reduce the stock, Bush Tomato and 70gm of the Red OchreÆ Bush Tomato Chilli Sauce in a wide pan down to 200ml.

Place glaze and 1 pastry on each plate, carve kangaroo and place on plate.

Top with remaining pastry and spring onion curls.
Serves 4.

................

Emu Surprise

3 lb. Emu Meat cut into 1-1 1/2 inch pieces
2 cans Cream of Mushroom Soup
1/2 can water
1 pk. Dry onion soup mix
1 small jar cocktail onions (drained and rinsed)
1/2 lb. fresh sliced mushrooms
1 cup dry sherry
fresh ground black pepper

Mix all the ingredients together.

Bake covered 3 to 3 1/2 hours at 350 degrees.

Serve over rice , noodles or in timbale cases of puff pastry.

My blue heeler/lab mix lived for 17 years. Never was sick until his back legs started giving out. I loved that dog. He was really cool.

When one of my cats was sick I had her on baby food. The vet told me to get baby food without onions or grapes. She said those two things would kill your pets. Just an interesting fact; I thought I would add.

What is it about the onions and the grapes that are so bad for pets? My dog gets a grape or two thrown his way every now and then.
