Jenna wants job in Harlem
New York Daily News ^ | 7/14/04

Presidential party girl Jenna Bush has applied for a job teaching grade school in Harlem.

"She was here for an interview but we don't know what's going to happen," a source at the Harlem Day Charter School told the Daily News.

The school has been praised for its back-to-basics approach and commitment to building student character.

Its founder, Benjamin Lambert, chairman and CEO of Eastdil Realty Co., said President Bush's daughter is one of "a number of famous names" who have expressed an interest in working at the school.

"I've never met her," Lambert said. "I was told she was very interested and was asked months ago if I had any problem in her visiting the school. I didn't have a problem with that."

Opened in 2001, the free public charter school enrolls 200 students in kindergarten through fourth grade, primarily from the Harlem area.

Most are from low-income families; 85% are black and 15% are Hispanic.

Charter schools are public schools that operate outside the traditional public school system under a five-year contract based on accountability.

In the first interviews granted by Jenna and her twin, Barbara, since her father was elected in 2000, Jenna declares her love for charter schools in an upcoming issue of Vogue.

She spent the summer of her sophomore year in college working at a charter school in Washington and says her "dream" is someday to open a charter school of her own.

But while she already has found an apartment in the city and wants to teach here, Jenna, like Barbara, has made clear that her immediate priority is getting dad reelected come November.

The twins will hit the campaign trail for their father in what would be their first foray into electoral politics.

"I love my dad, and I think I'd regret it if I didn't do this," Jenna Bush told Vogue.

If hired, the English major will bring with her an unfortunate reputation for being nearly as wild as her old man back in his younger days.

Both she and her Yale-grad twin got in trouble as college kids for their underage drinking, and Jenna Bush made headlines again when she used her Secret Service detail to spring a boyfriend from jail after he had been arrested for public intoxication.

Even in a positive story, the Libs have to find a way to inject this garbage.

Of course, they wouldn't think of adding anything about Kerrys disgusting behavior after Vietnam to any current Kerry stories.

And the tales of Algore's wayward LAW BREAKING son somehow were never newsworthy.

Well, this is commendable. She could go anywhere, but she chose helping others less fortunate than herself in public education.

It's a thankless job and we all wish Jenna Bush the very best and God's speed.

She's sobered up quite nicely!

This is just so much pre-election hogwash.

Despite all good intentions, Jenna would never be able to teach in a Harlem public school or anywhere else. Kidnapping and hostage-taking are the current weapons of choice of terrorists and the demented. Federal security would never allow Jenna (or any other high-profile political offspring) to be exposed to this on a daily basis.

The security details constantly at her side would obviate any settled routine in the classroom.

Alas, as much as we would like to think that presidential children can lead normal lives like us, it just doesn't work that way.

Nice story, though, with a grade E for effort.

I wondered about the security, too, but according to the report, she's already taught in D.C. .....probably as harsh an environment as NYC.

Things have changed radically since her sophomore college days.

However, I do hope she finds some way to realize her altruistic dreams.

I think MOST of us have a few months or years in our backgrounds that we would really rather forget. How gratifying it must be for "W" and Laura that their girls got it out of their systems young.

This is the first I have ever heard about this. We sure heard plenty about their negative connotation activities.

You hit it on the nose. But its good PR for minority votes if she just applies - she won't work in Harlem. Besides, its a tough job and she does not seem the focused missionary type.

This is just so much pre-election hogwash.

My sentiments exactly.

The timing and location of this seem a little obvious.

She may or may not want to teach in inner-city areas. We'll find out what she really wants to do in 2006 or so.

Avoid the area around 55 West 125th Street. The secret service have been watching there as one of the locations of a known sexual deviant.
