Arlington: No More 'Mr. Nice Guy' to Rat Population (Mega Liberal Animal Rights Barf Alert!)
Arlington, Virginia Sun Gazette ^ | 7/13/04 | Scott McCaffrey

Looks like the good times are over for Arlington County’s ever-present population of rats.

County officials made it clear Saturday that the rodents will no longer be treated quite as nicely as one was recently by the Animal Welfare League of Arlington. League officials found themselves under criticism last week, after a published report that a rat, having found itself inside a South Arlington home’s bathroom, was released back into the wild by one of the organization’s responding staff members.

“Does the county have a policy of releasing rats back into the community?” asked incredulous county activist Bernie Berne, who blasted the action at Saturday’s County Board meeting.

Board members were equally upset. County Board Chairman Barbara Favola called the decision to release the rat “very ridiculous.”

The fight for space between humans and rats in Arlington dates back to at least the 1940s, when massive amounts of earth were moved to make way for the Pentagon. As a result, large numbers of rat nesting areas were uprooted, and the rats headed into South Arlington neighborhoods to find new homes.

No one knows exactly how many rats call Arlington home. But three years ago, county officials launched an effort at control and eradication of the rodents. In 2003, County Manager Ron Carlee told board members that the efforts have “made good progress,” but some board members at the time were dubious.

At Saturday’s meeting, Carlee said that the Animal Welfare League had been informed that no more trapped or otherwise captured rats should be released. Instead, it’ll be lights out for them.

“This one fella got a future lease on life, but any of his friends that come inside [in the future] will go to the big cheese in the sky,” Carlee said.

Carlee was quick to note that rats do play some positive role in the community.

They were responsible in large part for clearing Arlington of millions of cicada carcasses earlier in the year, he said.

Cicada carcasses?!?!? that's what a broom a trash bag and garbage pickup is for!

good rat = dead rat

This is becoming a problem in North Arlington also.

Don't forget this is the county that built a shelter for the illegal immigrant casual labor.

And rats are an important part of the food chain - they eat the cicadas, the feral cats eat the rats, and the illegal immigrants eat the cats.

Some years ago, over on the other side of the asylum, the city council of the People's Republic of Takoma Park (MD, on the DC line) yielded to pressure from local granola heads and voted to replace rat poisoning with humane trapping. This was whooped through in an evening, and no one present bothered to ask what Takoma Park was going to do with the rats once they had them.

Naturally this question was asked the moment word seeped out to non-lunatics among the general public. Inquiry was made. The response was that the city planned to transport the rats up to Frederick County and release them in the countryside, "where they belonged."

Fortunately, Takoma Park reconsidered before the Frederick militia sacked the city and plowed the ground with salt. Close call, though.

As someone who is moving to Arlington in a couple of months, I saw eradicate the rats without mercy. Kill them all. Then kick out the idiots who think rats have rights. I'll enjoy living there far better after that.

What morons! Like cockroaches, rats are forever. Kill a bunch of em, and the ones remaining will reproduce like crazy.

I know chicken-huggers that don't hesitate to smash cockroaches to smithereenies.

Subtle (and stupid) was of saying that the humans disturbed the rats "natural habitat" line. Funny, I thought that rats were simply attracted to filth and disrepair. Perhaps the real reason there are rats there is its just that the people living in South Arlington are trashy.

I would reconsider living there. I did most of my childhood, and it was great. But now that the Dems run the county it is way to PC.
