Inquiry accused Senate prospect of 'lewd' behavior

WASHINGTON -- A potential Republican candidate for the Senate seat from Illinois -- where the party's nominee withdrew over sex club allegations -- engaged in "lewd and abusive behavior'' while she served as a top official in the White House drug policy office, an internal inquiry found last year.

In front of her staff, Andrea Grubb Barthwell made repeated comments about the sexual orientation of a staff member and used a kaleidoscope to make sexually offensive gestures, according to the findings of a March 19, 2003, "hostile workplace memorandum'' prepared by drug policy office staff. The Associated Press obtained the memorandum.

In an interview Wednesday with the AP, Barthwell said the memorandum overstates what happened, but she said she was wrong for participating in ``inappropriate banter'' at a staff birthday party.

"As the senior person there it was my job to stop it before it got started and I didn't. I in fact joined in,'' she said.

Barthwell said she has not decided whether to pursue the Senate seat, but she said the complaint should not be a factor in her candidacy.

And the hits just keep on coming... at least she (mostly) takes responsibility. I still think she's a pro-abortion RINO though...

Rumor has it that in the late 1990s she also attended a White House Christmas party where dildos were hanging from the tree.

Ooops... I guess that was only Hillary.

If a male politico admits he's turned on by a womans breasts, is he disqualified for office?

They must think Barack is a pretty weak candidate to be working so diligently to Clear the field for him.

Only because they are afraid the nasty stuff will come out against him before the election...

Afterwards when the tales of 3somes with gradeschool age boys and farm yard animals will be excused as personal behavior that is none of our business. </sarcasm>

This kind of behavior is unacceptable for a Republican and excludes him/her from consideration for public office. For a dem, it is mandatory and part of their basic training.

A couple of dem governors (West Virginia and ?) were banging honeys on the public payroll. The media shrugged and moved on. A Republican does the same thing and the media leads the pack demanding resignation.

A comparative study of media responses to public servants, dems and good guys, who did wromg would be interesting. Factor in race, as well, to see if there are any media differences in treatment.

I don't think she's even a Republican. Here's from a few days ago on the Illinois Leader:

"The former River Forest resident has been politically active over the past few years and has financially supported at least two Democrats -- $250 to Mayor Richard M. Daley in 2001 and $1000 in 2000 to Alderwoman Dorothy Tillman, and one Democratic organization, the 8th Ward Regular Democratic Organization. Illinois State Board of Election records show no contributions to Republicans.

At the federal level, she financially supported Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. with a donation of $1500 in 2000."

Just an observation on what she was alleged to have done. Since she was a deputy drug "czar" I'm assuming that the "staffer" was a subordinate. I'm a supervisor in my company, and I'd have to say that any such "fun" on the part of an executive/manager/supervisor with employees, even if it's at an off-site party, shows a severe lack of judgement. That's the kind of stuff that gets you into court for sexual harassment. Like it or not, them's the rules in the real world.
