Edwards' Brother Pleads Innocent to DUI

DENVER - The brother of Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards (news - web sites) pleaded innocent Monday to a 10-year-old charge of driving under the influence and was released on $5,000 bail pending trial.

Wesley Blake Edwards was allowed to return to his home in Fuquay-Varina, N.C., said Mike Knight, spokesman for the Arapahoe County district attorney's office.

A motions hearing was scheduled for Nov. 4 and a trial for Nov. 29. As a condition of his release, Edwards was ordered not to drink alcohol or drive without a license .

Edwards, 39, an electrician, was arrested in suburban Arapahoe County on Nov. 4, 1993, on suspicion of driving under the influence, careless driving and driving without insurance. A warrant was issued Jan. 6, 1994, after he failed to appear in court.

Harvey Steinberg, a lawyer who represents Edwards, contacted the district attorney's office after North Carolina newspapers reported details of the warrant. Arrangements had been made for Blake Edwards to turn himself in.

Edwards had three misdemeanor drunken-driving convictions in 1985, 1987 and 1990 in North Carolina, and his license was permanently revoked in 1990. He spent a week in jail on one of the convictions, records show.

Edwards has been charged twice with driving without a license, most recently in August. He pleaded guilty and paid a $100 fine.

If the case is ten years old, then maybe "Bobby Sox" has been helping out.

Must be nice to be able to pervert the law like that. Normal folks simply pass go, fess up some money, and end up in jail.

How screwed up is this? The guy has had his license permanently revoked since 1990... Driving is only a $100 fine? Worth the risk you won't get caught, vs. taking the bus, paying for taxis, etc...

Fresh from his image enhancing 'body language skills' class; Edwards communicates a message of 'holier than thou' - that is to say - a message of pious sincerety as he talks about lack of honesty in Government.

John Edwards "real" name -- the name he went by until he ran for Senate -- is Johnny Reed Edwards.

I know of a case in Massachusetts where a person got drunk, drove a car off a bridge and killed a woman and still gets to be a U.S. senator.

Edwards will probably file a 10 million dollar lawsuit against the county alleging brain damage because they made him use a breathalizer and didn't do a blood test.

Funny thing... this warrant was outstanding for 10 years.

Funny thing...it was the New York Daily News (as far as I can tell), who broke the story on Edwards' brother having a drinking/driving problem. (Who even knew he had a brother before this?)

And how ha ha funny, that only now is this being "fixed", and one has to assume John Edwards is footing the bill.

Brothers shouldn't be held responsible for brothers, but really folks, how did this story stay hidden for so long? North Carolina newspapers have been writting long, detailed bio articles on Edwards for years, this should have been old, old news. As should the fact that Edwards bought his brother a $100,000.00 house.

The real story here is that the media kept Edwards' secret, and then accepted his lame explanation, that he didn't know the extent of his brother's problem.
