AP: Clinton Adviser Probed in Terror Memos

WASHINGTON - President Clinton (news - web sites)'s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after admitting he removed highly classified terrorism documents from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned.
Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI (news - web sites) agents armed with warrants. Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al-Qaida terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.
Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed handwritten notes he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants. He also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio, they said.
"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention of withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced," Berger said in a statement to the AP.
Berger served as Clinton's national security adviser for all of the president's second term and most recently has been informally advising Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites). Clinton asked Berger last year to review and select the administration documents that would be turned over to the commission.
The FBI searched Berger's home and office with warrants earlier this year after employees of the National Archives told agents they believed they witnessed Berger put documents into his clothing while reviewing sensitive Clinton administration papers, officials said.
When asked, Berger said he returned some of the classified documents, which he found in his office, and all of the handwritten notes he had taken from the secure room, but said he could not locate two or three copies of the highly classified millennium terror report.

Has anyone figured out why, since an employee saw Berger stuff papers down his pants, in clear violation of the law and the rules, he wasn't stopped then and there?

According to Levin's article and Ashcroft's testimony, the hunt for the terrorists should have begun in FULL FORCE in 2000.
Secondly, the Millenial plot review information, according to Ashcroft, was not passed on to Pres. Bush's administration. The critical conclusion in that review was that there was a network of AQ operatives within the US that needed to be uprooted via aggressive enforcement of immigration laws and other legal tactics. THIS IS VERY DAMNING EVIDENCE FOLKS!
Thirdly, Burger was caught red handed -- hopefully on video tape! In due time I believe it will be proven that Gorelick tried to clean things up from within the commission.
Ashcroft's 9/11 testimony is the Rosetta stone, as far as I can tell it looks pretty bad for the dims.
I have the exact same question. And why, when Berger has known that he was caught red-handed, did he become part of the Kerry team? These are serious allegations, did he presume to have the outcome wired or did he think it all ended with his apology that he couldn't find the rest of the documents?
If Sandy kept his mouth shut...no one knew about this. That is why it is such a shock to the liberals system. If there were word of this anywhere..it would have broken long ago so as not to damage the demonrats. Maybe Sandy made a deal. I don't know...BUT THIS IS SO MUCH FUN.....TOUCHDOWN PATRIOTS !!!!
Very interesting choice of companions. That means three people at least know what Berger lifted.
With the ties to left wing eco terrorists groups that Taraza Heinz Kerry has with her Tides Foundation, and Kerry's Advisor's doing Perp walks in the coming month's, this is not gonna be a Kodak moment for the Democratic Party...... But with all the coming reports, it's gonna be a "Save As" moment for me :-)
I do have to agree with your assessment IF we had an honest press...how much they will cover it up in terms of reporting in once or twice and then dropping it is the question.
