AP: Clinton Adviser Probed in Terror Memos

By JOHN SOLOMON

WASHINGTON - President Clinton (news - web sites)'s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after admitting he removed highly classified terrorism documents from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned.

Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI (news - web sites) agents armed with warrants. Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al-Qaida terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.

Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed handwritten notes he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants. He also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio, they said.

"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention of withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced," Berger said in a statement to the AP.

Berger served as Clinton's national security adviser for all of the president's second term and most recently has been informally advising Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites). Clinton asked Berger last year to review and select the administration documents that would be turned over to the commission.

The FBI searched Berger's home and office with warrants earlier this year after employees of the National Archives told agents they believed they witnessed Berger put documents into his clothing while reviewing sensitive Clinton administration papers, officials said.

When asked, Berger said he returned some of the classified documents, which he found in his office, and all of the handwritten notes he had taken from the secure room, but said he could not locate two or three copies of the highly classified millennium terror report.

I have to go to bed. I will check in on this thread in the morning. Meanwhile, as I drift off to sleep, I will try and figure out what's going on.

BTW, I just recalled something. Someone on behalf of the Clinton administration raised a hue and cry about the Bush administration not sending the commission all the documents that were available from the Clinton administration files

I remember them yapping about not handing over documents .. but I didn't know they were talking about Clinton's documents

DU is funny tonight:
this is seriously cheneyed up. what an idiot. he has left himself wide open for whatever happens next. he should have been more careful if he had to steal documents to cover for Clinton. the bush people never get caught making things disappear.

Also, the Commish allowed Clinton, Berger and Linsey to sliver in undetected the same day they were tearing Condi apart. This is some real dishonest stuff. The fact that the Gore Commission on aviation security and Clinton's dereliction of duty regarding the Sudan offer hasn't gotten wall to wall coverage by the media is a crime.

We are dealing with an extraordinary level of negligence and bad faith. This nation deserves better than this.

"Story is going worldwide. Winnipeg Sun has this header: "Clinton national security adviser investigated for taking classified documents"

What an opening for the Dims convention, one does have to wonder who leaked this. Maybe Hillry wants cold water to run fast and early.

Who gets copies of these documents? Kerry! That's why he's been playing intelligence against Bush because he thought these documents would not be found leaving Bush defenseless.

Just went to DU to see if they were saying anything regarding this matter and I found a few words of IDIOCY and just had to share tehm here:

I downloaded F911 from the internet.....sorry, but I am unemployed and dead broke, and I just couldn't stand it any longer. I had to see it. It was, indeed, a good movie. And it covered a lot of things that have been covered here. I think that it will blow the minds of some Republicans. It is a history-maker, in and of itself

"Dead broke" enough to afford a high-speed internet connection? Schweet story. Oh, forgot, you've been downloading it for the last 18 days over a free AOL dialup...

Thanks so much for judging me and my situation! I have a cable modem, which costs $30.00 a month. I don't have a telephone and I don't have hot water, am unemployed, and my husband hasn't been paid in over two weeks. And, it won't be long before they cut the cable internet access off, too. Oh, and the only thing in the house to eat? Microwave popcorn. If it's any of your business.

But, once again, thanks so much for judging me and my situation.

Your world sounds a lot like mine. I can't even seem to scrape together five bucks to send to DU, not with the power company looming over me while I roll pennies to pay them. Hell, even my car tags are expired.

And I work every day.

Welcome to Dick Cheney's America.

Amazing folks who don't have money who can "fast download" Pirated copy of Moore's Documentary. I'm on "dial up" and not in financial difficulty...but wonder how folks can afford DLS/Cable/T-1 when they claim they are too poor to afford a movie ticket.

Begs my imagination.

Sat Jul-17-04 05:45 PM Response to Reply #16

Judging is what DU does best I'm sorry you got those rude comments, but that's DU.

I'm in a lot the same situation, and have had the same insensitive in uncaring criticisms.

I wish you well, and I'm glad you did what you needed to do for yourself, and downloaded the movie. I'm sure Michael is glad it's available for you.

Enjoy it, feel good about yourself, and thanks for your efforts in the cause of democracy!

Doncha just love it when people make snap judgements when they don't know shit?

When you said you were broke ..I took you at your word..I'm not so rollin' in dough, either, but I have my priorites and my computer and internet connection is one of them.

I hope things go better for you and your husband real soon..hang in there!

And so glad you got to see F9/11..I'm one of those who saw Moore saying he didn't care if it was downloaded..he just wants People to see the freakin' thing!

Sat Jul-17-04 06:56 AM Response to Reply #3

I downloaded F911 at my job... Sure, I can afford it... but it will take a few months for it to start playing here, and I just wasn't planning to wait. But what if I lived in the US, and didn't have any money? I would download it at work if I were allowed to. You don't need to have Internet access at home in order to do it.

Your attitude is pathetic.

Sat Jul-17-04 05:28 PM Response to Reply #3

Judgemental, aren't we? How is the rarefied air up there on that high horse?
