"Holmes said he also found Kerry has a distant family connection with pop diva Britney Spears..."

Does this mean she'll be getting invited to the White House if Kerry is elected? Hey, Bill Clinton had his brainless female celebrity guest with the initials BS, why shouldn't Kerry?

Yeah, but were there any slave owners in the family tree? Going back to 1720 there is a strong possibility that someone may have benefited from the unpaid labor of another human being. Do you think Kerry would get 92% of the black vote if he was descended from slave owners?

John Kerry’s family tree includes the Irish immigrant believed to have introduced the potato to America, according to research by a local historian.

Stupid nonsense. The potato was a new world plant. No European 'introduced' it to America.

and bill clinton was black.

I think it was Chris Rock who said he believed that Clinton was the first black President. He said..."he plays the sax, smokes weed and sleeps with ugly white women...yep he's black alright"

It doesn't matter what Kerry's ancestry is. He'll be anything you want him to be. The only thing that didn't go over too well was when he tried to take the baton from Clinton and become the second black president.

"James McGregor, minister of the Aghadowey congregation and leader of the expedition, got a grant of land on the frontier north of the Merrimac river in what is now New Hampshire, which he named Londonderry in honour, he said, of Ulster Protestants' 'finest hour'. Another ship, the Maccullum, followed soon after from Derry; its passengers settled at Casco Bay in Maine, where they were soon locked in conflict with local native Americans. From the outset the Ulster Presbyterians were to prove themselves pugnacious frontiersmen."

Twas truly 1718, they first landed at Boston, believed to be five ships in all. They later moved to Londonderry, NH, and later Falmouth, ME (ie. Casco Bay).

Devout Presbyterians, they were.

My ancestor Peter Starrat was among them, and later his line moved to Annapolis, Nova Scotia (about 1756). They were lured by British grants of land, to displace French settlers, and were called "Planters" in local history.

I'm surprised that he didn't mention that Kerry is also distantly related to GW.

That's weird.,

I thought potatoes were introduced to Europe from *here*.

The potato, too, is a member of the nightshade family and, if Alton Brown and his Nutritional Anthropoligst are to be believed, most of Europe didn't want much to do with it because of that. I wonder, sometimes, how mankind survived after all these crazy attempts at sticking things in our mouths (hey look, berries! Hey, look, I dry this leaf out, roll it up, light it on fire and suck on it! hey, look, 'schrooms!).

I'm suprised he hasn't used this research as an opporunity to tell Wolf Blitzer that his family took initiative in creating the potato...

Stupid nonsense. The potato was a new world plant. No European 'introduced' it to America.

"Potatoes originated in the Andes mountains of Peru and Bolivia and have been cultivated for at least 2400 years...

Potatoes were introduced into Europe in the sixteenth century after the conquest of Peru by the Spanish. Cultivation spread quickly throughout Europe, but the first large-scale production was in Ireland. The Irish quickly became dependent on potatoes as a staple of their diet. This dependence resulted in mass starvation and emigration when late blight, Phytophthera infestans, destroyed the Irish potato crop for two years in a row in the 1840's. In colonial times, potatoes were introduced to North America by Irish immigrants, which is why they are sometimes called 'Irish' potatoes. More properly they should simply be called 'potatoes' or 'white potatoes' to distinguish them from sweetpotatoes."

From the Land of the Incas to Europe to Ireland to New England; a roundabout journey indeed. I got acquainted with the story when I saw the 1993 "Seeds of Change: Cultural Exchange after 1492" exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.

The McGregors that Kerry is related to were not Irish, they migrated to Londonderry, Ireland from Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland and were related the the famous Rob Roy McGregor. They fled to Ireland in the 1650s or 60s and then to America in 1718. James McGregor was a first cousin of Rob Roy McGregor, their fathers David and Donald, were half brothers whos father was Malcolm Og McGregor.
