Talking about great books to read this summer, I recently chatted with my friend Dick Scaife. "This is the best book written about what happened in the '90s," he said emphatically.
The book he was referring to was the recently published "Hillary's Secret War: The Clinton Conspiracy to Muzzle Internet Journalists," by Richard Poe (Thomas Nelson/WND).
I told Dick I couldn't agree with him more. Poe, a New York Times best-selling author, has really told the story of what happened in the 1990s. We both agreed that the title of the book, however, doesn't really tell the whole story.
The story of the '90s was not so much about Hillary Clinton. She was incidental to it. The story was how some Americans tried to get information to the public during a period when the establishment media held a near-monopoly on the information flow to the American people.
They were the "gatekeepers," and journalists like me were the partisans. But like the Berlin Wall that collapsed, the gatekeepers in the United States lost control of the gates.
The rise of the Internet was the key story of the '90s and led to the undermining of the establishment media.
This period also coincided with the Clinton presidency.

Arrrghh - I got so excited, I posted twice...
You bet.
Just finished this book. Loaned from my brother, who sent it to you for your signature, and while I read it, I would flip to the front, see your signature, and thank the Lord.
Every Freeper must have it, and share it. Poe zooms out for a macro view of the 90s web phenom, and it puts your amazing FR scene into historical perspective. You must feel humbled at the awesome power of FR. You spawned a mighty force against the powerful Hillary attack team.
I felt so proud to be an occasional poster at FR, and to have lurked at all the sites mentioned in the book. It makes the point that, without the new conservative web nation, Gore may well have stolen the White House. FR announced street demonstrations, which I attended during the standoff in late 2000. Imagine the different Americawe'd live in NOW... had the right not demanded transparency in the Florida recount!.
Thank God Democrats are technophobic, they can't seem to grasp this www thing. JR, you will remembered for generations if I can help it.
Keep up the good fight Jim Robinson.
Cheers to Freerepublic.
=8-)
LOL. Thank you very much!
Democrats are "technophobic"?! Why, that sounds like HATE speach.

Thank you.

FROM THE DEMOCRATS/SOCIALISTS PLAYBOOK |
"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State." -- Joseph Goebbels, German Minister of Propaganda, 1933-1945 |
hahaha !
