NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. Army has long lured recruits with the slogan "Be All You Can Be," but now soldiers and their families can receive plastic surgery, including breast enlargements, on the taxpayers' dime.
The New Yorker magazine reports in its July 26th edition that members of all four branches of the U.S. military can get face-lifts, breast enlargements, liposuction and nose jobs for free -- something the military says helps surgeons practice their skills.
"Anyone wearing a uniform is eligible," Dr. Bob Lyons, chief of plastic surgery at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio told the magazine, which said soldiers needed the approval of their commanding officers to get the time off.
Between 2000 and 2003, military doctors performed 496 breast enlargements and 1,361 liposuction surgeries on soldiers and their dependents, the magazine said.
The magazine quoted an Army spokeswoman as saying, "the surgeons have to have someone to practice on."

The purpose of these plastic surgeons is to do reconstructive plastic surgery on the maimed and wounded.
They do have to keep their hands in when we are not suffering massive battlefield casualties.

When I first heard about this the other (on GMA - I confess), they were speaking to a woman who had 3 cosmetic surgeries in the late 80's. Teeth fixed, jaw fixed, and then the nose done.
Today's leadership is apprently no different from leadership past.

This is nothing new, it is dredged up every couple years by any reporter who wishes to discredit our Military. I see nothing wrong with the practice. It is not an on demand procedure but space available.
With the exception of the liposuction - which I have not yet heard of actually being performed - the rest are skills that would be needed to treat combat disfigurement. Military medicine has often led the field in reconstructive surgery.
People will snicker at the breast implants - but chest wounds happen to women too. Should a woman not have reconstructive surgery?
Our military is also offering Lasik corrective eye surgery. Is this to be considered an ego procedure, only done so that member can look better without glasses? Glasses or contacts cause problems in rain, sand, high humidity etc.

If breast tissue is lost due to wounds, no reconstruction should be authorized - because its only tits? Give me a break!

Having big boobs increases your self confidence. Hence, it makes you fight better!? The same logic of "sloppy" paper handling of Sandy Berger stuffing documents in his pants/socks. You can explain any stupid thing to STUPID people!
