Soldier Home From Iraq Strikes It Rich In Lottery

POSTED: 7:32 am EDT July 22, 2004

NORWOOD, Mass. -- John Morrissey's luck was just beginning when he made it back from Iraq.

The Massachusetts National Guardsman will be getting $200,000 a year for life, thanks to a winning scratch-off lottery ticket.

That $10 winning ticket will pay him about $143,000 a year after taxes.

Morrissey bought the ticket last week. He returned to the states just five weeks ago after serving a 13-month tour in Iraq.

The divorced father of two said the big bucks will help get him out of bankruptcy and pay for his kids' college education. He told the Boston Herald that he always had faith that he'd hit it big someday.

Morrissey is a member of the 110th Maintenance Company of the Massachusetts Army National Guard. He returned from Iraq last month after serving at an air base outside Nazariyah.

(he) always had faith that he'd hit it big someday.

LOL, doesn't this describe 95% of all lottery players?

Is his tour over, or is he going back?

Will the military discharge him?

I heard of a girl that hit the CA lottery while in the AF who was administratively discharged. The reason was rumored to be that the military didn't expect an enlisted person that was previously earning $2k a month to be capable of, or motivated to, properly fulfilling their duties when suddenly presented with such great wealth.

Anyone else heard of this?

Heh! And he can't just up and quit his job like I would. Well, he has the option of sitting pretty soon enough.

WOO HOO!

A guy who is not only in bankruptcy, but buys lottery tickets in spite of it?

He will be broke again in less than 5 years.

Could be that they would do a discharge...But while $143,000/yr is really good money, but it isn't (if he's smart) the mind-changing sudden wealth that several million in a lump sum would be.

But Pat turned down the money, right? He didn't actually have the money, did he?

Agree....A lot of times, divorce bankrupts the man or the couple because of a combination of outstanding debt and monthly child support. Hope the soldier is wise with his dough and his ex....

Hope so too.

In Texas, I was lucky enough to avoid the formula mandated support payments, after my divorce, like they have now.

I actually got to plead my case in front of a judge. I was in the military and assumed all the bills and had sent a monthly support check with a court order. He increased my monthly support by $25.

I wonder what MA divorce courts will do though?? Any FReepers with experience?

You were lucky. Sorry to here the family broke up. Being a military brat myself, I personally understand the hardships a few 1 yr TDY can place on the family. Other than law enforcement, I believe military personnel suffer the highest group rate of divorce, maybe even higher. I was lucky on my D, no kids between us even though I was there 16 yrs. to help raise a really great stepdaughter. Just now 'getting back on my feet$' (2 yrs. past) after a large property settlement. Keep the house and let her walk :>) Guess who's been tryin' to meet now? Forget about it.

Anyway, texson66, that's the way it goes. Pray for this nation....we need it and to you and all who serve

Glad to see the "Soldier" win. Money is good and serving out you term of service yields a reward to our country, the military and the individual. (Airborne All The Way) Bush/Cheney 2004

At least his ex-wife won't get to spend any of it. I bet she is regretting having divorced him now.

Pat Tillman was already wealthy, and turned down guaranteed millions more.
