Up to 100 people may have died when a train derailed in northwestern Turkey, a local official told the NTV news channel.

"We do not exactly how many people died in the accident, but we estimate that nearly 100 people were killed," Feridun Turan, the mayor of Pamukova town, near the site of the accident, said.

He said several people were also injured in the accident when the train, which was on its way from Istanbul to the capital Ankara, derailed due to a yet unknown reason near Pamukova in Sakarya province.

The Anatolia news agency put the toll at 50 killed and 20 injured, but gave no source for the information.

A doctor from a hospital near the accident site had earlier put the death toll at least 30 killed.

This may get interesting. Very little coverage in press so far, but it should only be a matter of minutes before the FBI tells the Turks to rule out terrorism.

They're not saying yet. I read elsewhere it was a high-speed train...

The cause was not known, but the train began operating on June 4 amid controversy, with critics saying the tracks were old and could not withstand the new, high-speed cars.

Very little coverage in press so far, but it should only be a matter of minutes before the FBI tells the Turks to rule out terrorism.

Which is only beat by the speed of conspiracy Freepers rushing to their keyboards to proclaim that it surely must be terrorism(never mind inconvenient things like facts.)

Unfortunately large casualty train wrecks are and have been quite common in developing countries, long before terrorism came into vogue. Why don't you wait for some facts before taking snotty cheap shots at law enforcement and intelligence agencies? They may screw up sometimes, but they are doing a heck of a lot more to keep this country safe than 99.9% of you critics.

Most of those who call themselves conservative or liberal could actually become bearable if they practiced a bit of patience, humility, and respect. Yet they know not what they're doing, so there's little chance of that ever happening..
