A BAND OF 14 ILLEGAL ALIEN SYRIANS?!

By Michelle Malkin · July 23, 2004 01:47 AM

WNBC investigative reporter Scott Weinberger reported on Joe Scarborough's MSNBC show tonight that the 14 Syrians on Northwest Flight 327 ALL had expired visas. He said that law enforcement officials xeroxed the men's paperwork without looking at the dates. The visas had expired nearly a month earlier, according to Weinberger.

US security must be made aware that their 2 great oceans are no protection anymore. 9/11 should have taught them that. If this story is true, this is a great failure, and sad that even after 9/11/01 this occurs. But then again, who knows what has been sneaking in from Mexico and Canada.

This does not give me much confidence in the background checks that the Joint Terrorism Task Force, FBI, and LAPD may or may not have conducted on the men before letting them walk away. Would you trust the terrorism investigation of officials who apparently neglected to verify whether these men--coming from a designated state sponsor of terrorism--WERE EVEN IN THE COUNTRY LEGALLY?!?!?!

If Weinberger's reporting is accurate, I won't be surprised. The 14 men join a club of at least an estimated 2.3 million illegal visa overstayers currently living in the U.S. today. Until September 11, 2001, the Visa Overstayers Club also included "student" Hani Hanjour and "businessmen and tourist" Nawaf al-Hazmi and Satam al-Suqami.

I don't understand. What visa would they be under? Visitor, right. For the gig and short duration. Why would the date be expired for the specific dates they where to be here. Was it the passports? That I could understand. But those would be check several spots prior...Syria, any layover before entry to US, Detroit.

This is incredible, Joe.

Prior to 2001 I was acquainted with two people who overstayed their visas. One was a woman (with two children) fleeing an abusive husband in Pakistan and the other a British man.

Both had neglected to send in necessary paperwork to the INS, both neglected to make their mandatory return appointments and both heard instantly from the INS.

The Pakistani woman first received an official INS letter, then a phone call and then an INS official made a fast judgement that the woman was going to be deported, that is put on a plane and sent back to Pakistan in two weeks.

Because of her circumstances, I wanted to help her stay. I phoned local elected officials and several immigration attorneys. Finally one attorney helped her and she and her two children were able to stay.

The British man was forcefully escorted out several times yet he would always sneak back in through Canada. In his case, it seemed to be more sport than anything. He seemed delighted when INS came looking for him at his place of work. His co-workers and boss always covered for him.

Remembering the frequent and direct interactions with INS officials experienced by the Pakistani woman and the British man, I'm baffled how anyone these days can get away with overstaying a visitor's visa or cheating the system for an employment visa.

Did you see this?

Terrorists easily faked passports, panel reports
http://www.iht.com/articles/530713.htm

"Al Qaeda itself created a document forgery unit that was skilled at making adjustments in the field while building institutional knowledge on "cleaning" documents - how to substitute photographs or to erase or add travel stamps - as well as avoiding document confiscation and generally keeping the pipeline of fraudulent documents flowing."

Another interesting article:

Tracking 'Terrorist Travel' Is a Key Defense
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A7647-2004Jul22.html

"Before the Sept. 11 attacks, the U.S. government was ill-equipped to match al Qaeda's sophistication in this area, partly because the Immigration and Naturalization Service was overwhelmed even by its basic immigration tasks, the report said.

Even so, five al Qaeda members who intended to take part in the Sept. 11 attacks were denied entry into the United States because their papers were not in order. The commission's report also said that if immigration rules had been enforced strictly, as many as 15 of the 19 hijackers might have been barred from the country because they were not the tourists they claimed to be, or they violated other regulations.

Officials said analysts at the CIA and elsewhere now keep track of the theft of blank unissued passports around the world and bribe-taking by employees of passport offices in foreign nations. "

An instantly checkable fingerprint on an ID card and on visas and passports would take care of a lot of this. Just swipe them through a reader hooked into a database.

This is a huge problem. The system is only as good as its weakest link and it appears PEOPLE are one of the weak links. IF IT IS TRUE that these law enforcement folks let these guys slip through with expired VISAs simply because they didn't pay attention to the dates--EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM SHOULD BE FIRED. This isn't the first time I have heard of this kind of slacker attitude at the front line and letting potential terrorists get through when they could have been caught.

Did you see any of the other threads about these guys? "We", as in some concerned Citizens, did do thier job and reported the men. As usual, "the government" lets "We the People" down yet again.
This lapse is deplorable and very incriminating.
They're all gone now and the presumed "casing" scenario depicted just went "code red" in my book.

Yes.

And the collective genius of the 9-11 commission combined with our elected officials ignore the obvious and suggest bureaucratic solutions.

The the terror threat for Americans lies with illegals already here, and the ease of illegal entry into our country.
