WASHINGTON, July 23: Bangladesh, Nigeria, Poland and Ethiopia were the top finishers in the US visa lottery, which granted 50,000 permanent residence visas, or "green cards," allowing recipients to live and work in the United States, the US State Department said Thursday.
The "diversity lottery," held each year under the US Immigration and Nationality Act, distributes the visas to residents of countries which have low immigration rates to the United States.
Applicants were selected at random from a total of some 9.5 million applications submitted from November 1 to December 30, 2003, said the State Department.
Bangladesh got 7,404 visas, Nigeria 6,725, Poland 6,211 and Ethiopia 6,060. Countries with heavy immigration to the United States, including Canada, China (minus Hong Kong and Taiwan), Colombia, Pakistan, The Philippines, Russia, South Korea, Britain (minus Northern Ireland) and Vietnam, were excluded from the lottery. — AFP

AMAZING.......9.5 Million applicants (in TWO months) wanting to come to the USA to work & live LEGALLY......& only 50K get a chance.
Meanwhile 75% of our politicians spend much time & tax dollars *rewarding* the MILLIONS of illegals already here.......& citizens are told daily "we need all those illegal workers, the country *can't function* without them".
Boot the illegals, & bring in more legals, *if* we need the labor.

thank you...i can be accused of being a few things, idealistic, a little too optimistic, and even a bit PC but I'm not an American hater.
There are a few people on FR,who will go to any length to lie about others,to further their own agenda/puff themselves up.It isn't right And whilst I can add a few other things you happen to be guilty of(but I shan't.LOL),being an anti-American and pro illegal aliens aren't amongst them.
They don't need tourist visas; they do need work visas.

I've never met an illegal alien who came here for the government welfare. I do know some and they work very hard and pay all their bills in full, in cash. They know that I think illegal stay is wrong but sometimes I wish I could kick out some lazy azz Americans and let them stay.

He was the main instigator a long time before that. Do you know why the law reads that merely belonging to a terrorist group or making terrorist threats is not sufficient grounds to be denied a vias to the U.S.?
It's because Teddy boy forced that into the law so his IRA thug friends could come to the U.S. to raise funds to blow up more people back home.

BTW, I never stated my position on visa lotteries. They should be done away with and the process streamlined. There's something unseemly about lotteries to begin with.
