Mountain-biker Bush takes fall
Denver Post ^ | Monday, July 26, 2004 | Scott Lindlaw

Crawford, Texas - President Bush plunged down hills and plowed through the brush on his high-end, high-performance mountain bike today - and wound up flat on his back.

A bit shaken up, Bush dusted himself off, got back on his bike and kept rolling, a small cut on his knee and dirt on his back the only signs he had wrecked.

With an Associated Press reporter along for the ride, Bush tore around his 1,600-acre Texas ranch today.

A one-time jogger, Bush has been riding the knobby-tired bikes only since February, but he rides with abandon. He went biking today as Democrats gathered in Boston for their convention to nominate Sen. John Kerry as their presidential candidate.

Bush keeps a cramp-inducing pace on the uphills, panting hard by the time he reaches each peak, backing off a little to recover, attacking the next hill just as hard.

His heart rate reached 168 beats per minute, about four times his resting rate and in the same range as Lance Armstrong's when the six-time Tour de France winner is pedaling hard.

"At my age, you're more concerned about the cardiovascular" benefits of a workout, Bush said. Mountain biking, he said, has a certain "mind-clearing" effect on him as well.

"My right knee has finally had it," Bush said. "Running is really a painful experience for me now."

"I was looking for a different way to get outside and get exercise," he said. "Swimming is outside exercise, but you don't get the feeling of the wind rushing past you, nor can you swim your favorite piece of property."

That is classic Bush.

"his high-end, high-performance mountain bike"

They're attempting to inoculate Kerry for his snobby custom road bike.

CNN Headline: Bush falls on bike again, Kerry reports that the timing of the incident appears suspicious.

Will John Kerry make any childish comments about it this time?

Notice he didn't blame the fall on his Secret Service detail, nor even on Kerrey or the DemocRats.

...but he rides with abandon...

This is why I have not taken up mountain biking. I will stick to my road bike, thank you very much.

No girlie-man he!

Do you have any earthly idea how hot it is in Crawford right now?? I'm truly impressed.

He didn't even blame it on the AP reporter, sort of like a certain would be First Lady likely would. :)

Bush bought his.

Kerry couldn't afford his, sans his wife.

Bush has a resting heart rate of 42!? That's fantastic...especially for a man his age (58). Lance Armstrong is a 33 year old world class athlete. Go Dubya!

Isn't crashing what real mountain bikers do in the beginning? Depending on their course, they do crashing a lot.

Bush rides at a MANLY-MAN'S pace and LIKES to push himself! Kerry rides at a GIRLY-MAN'S pace and likes to PUSH AROUND OTHERS!
