Louisiana loses jobs in chemical manufacturing, oil support

NEW ORLEANS -- As Louisiana failed to sustain much employment growth over the past year, two key economic and well-paying sectors -- the oil support industry and chemical manufacturing -- took major hits, the state labor department reported Monday.

Only three of the state's seven metropolitan areas showed overall gains, while the New Orleans region had 10,300 fewer non-farm jobs in June than in June 2003.

Statewide, there were 1,000 more non-farm jobs in June than in June 2003, the labor department said. But the growth was centered entirely in the service area of the economy, while petroleum, construction and manufacturing all dropped.

Figures from the goods-producing sector, which had an overall loss of 5,900 jobs, reflected two situations slowing the economy: a lack of sustained drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, and layoffs in the chemical industry, which has been hurt by high natural gas prices.

No surprise. I left Louisiana, moving the family in the process, after 30+ years there(late '80's = lack of engineering jobs there) and moved to Texas for work.

Don't have an answer but some of the unique mindsets(the lotto and/or casinos will save us!) are no help at all.

"layoffs in the chemical industry, which has been hurt by high natural gas prices." How 'bout that natural gas pipeline from Alaska that will never get built?

Against a pathetic opponent like Kerry, it should be more like 80-20.

It costs more to do business (oil) here than in Texas and Oklahoma; the lawyers here are also tort crazy. Time and money issues (regs, permits, lawsuits) are costing the oil patch beaucoup jobs.

From top to bottom.

All the state elected dems went off to the DNC. It left our Secretary of State (who'll always get in becuase of his family name) all alone at the state house. I get a chuckle thinking of how he's the third in line and he's in charge and the next guy in line who's in state is wayyyyyy down there.

In addition....

Not to joke about it but you could fit all our statewide elected Republicans in a Yugo.
