"Given Nancy's failure, Michael Reagan should speak."

Michael is probably a much better speaker anyway. Nancy has been holed up caring for an invalid for many years. She is aged and out of practice in dealing with the public. Michael could handle the situation much better.

Nancy Reagan has taken care of her husband for these last years. It is beyond disgusting, it is putrid, to use her children in the way that the dems are. I say, leave this poor woman alone and do not try to embroil the rest of the family in this ron ballerina drama. It is truly disgusting.

It is?

I wonder how big they want the babies to get before killing them for their stem cells --- a fetus of a few weeks old is still pretty small and wouldn't yield all that many --- a full term baby would likely have more in it's umbilical cord than a smaller one who had to give up it's life to the researchers.

Given that he's more his father's son, it's a pity his first name isn't Ron.

A downcast senior GOP official confirmed Nancy Reagan had never committed to appearing at the convention, but was nevertheless dubious of the official explanation.

"The 'not feeling up to it' line is bull----," the official said. "Something happened in the last month, and whatever it was was real."

What an @$$!
I don't care what stripe he wears, this guy's a certified, grade 'A', #1 Choice-Cut @$$hole.

Do you really think that if those other two source were as good as using embryo cells, they wouldn't use them??? Or this would even be an issue?

Do you think there is a conspiracy here?

Much as we would like to, I don't believe President Reagan's conservatism can be projected onto Nancy. I'm of the opinion she's always been a closet liberal.....keeping her ideology under wraps because of her adoration for her husband.

I agree completely. Nancy has never been overtly political, but now that her husband is gone, she can express her true feelings. I think she shares the predominant Hollywood ideology.

If the private sector wants to do stem cell research, they can...just not with federal monies. If it's so promising, why aren't they doing it? A cure for any disease is worth untold gazillions.

Two possibilities.

(1) Human fetal stem cells don't look like they have much promise in actually curing disease.

(2) There could be a backlash against companies that perform this research by both stock holders and potential customers. Remember RU-486? None of the existing pharmaceutical companies wanted to touch it even with a robotic arm. They were afraid of boycotts being organized against their other products. Recently vaccine companies have had similar problems. Apparently some vaccines like the Rubella vaccine are manufacutred from viruses isolated from aborted fetuses. Other vaccines for viruses are made from viruses cultured in cell lines from aborted fetuses. Acambis changed its plans for using such a cell line for manufacturing new batches of smallpox vaccine for the US government after receiving complaints.

Not a Closet Liberal but rather an old school, Country Club Wasp republican. Or maybe a "Taft" Republican. As to her backing of Reagan;s beliefs, that is really just a speculation on either side of the issue.

No it's not.

And, nobody heard Ron Reagan.

Nobody cares about this issue, and nobody cares what Ronald Reagan's family thinks.

I agree with you, one hundred percent. I, as the old gray fox can also relive those days of pushing hard to get Ronald Reagan elected. However, Nancy Reagan is now a very old woman, her mind is probably not all it once was and she clings to her child even if he is disloyal to the memory of his great father. I am as upset as you are, but my common sense says, let it go! Ron, Jr. has made an ass out of himself, and will have no friend of comfort after this election is over. He will become like Richard Clarke, Joe Wilson, Sandy Berger a non-entity forever. Let it go, you'll feel better! It's Ronald Reagan we will be honoring! As for Nancy, she has only Patty and Ron, Jr. left. And.....Ron Jr., retard that he is, is his mother's child.

"stem cell research is a major issue in people minds"

Well, in a close circle of mine, it is. A dear friend of ours has ALS (Lou Gherig's Disease) - his network of ALS patients, their families, researchers and doctors speak of stem cell research as if it is the holy grail in treatment of this disease (as well as others.) I understand that they desperately need a cure for this Most Horrible Disease on the Planet (I watch my friend dwindle a little bit each day. . .I see his friends do the same, I hear of a new horrible death each day from this) and there is great hostility towards the current administration putting restrictions on it.

I agree that if there was such huge promise, private companies would be taking it to task themselves.

Through "osmosis" I am exposed to this network of my friend's and these people are not happy with Bush at all regarding this issue. Some info on this thread has been enlightening for me regarding the use of adult vs. embryonic stem cells, what's worked, what hasn't, and the post that outlines the actual law surrounding it.

Interestingly, there is talk on the street that Michael J. Fox has been traveling to China for treatments for his Parkinson's Disease...if you've noticed, he is making a tremendous recovery.

I think this story is overblown. Everyone knows Ron is an idiot, and Nancy is not obligated to do anything in public. She just lost her husband for goodness sake.

The truth about federal funding for embryonic stem cell research will put an end to RR's fantasies.

Compared to Zell Miller, no doubt we got the best of the bargain!

Gladly I leave the animal planet host to the dems! Very fitting.

It's altogether conceivable that this woman has had a stroke, has sunk into deep depression or both. Skpeaking becomes impossible under either of those circumstances.

It's been sad to think that RR has no biological descendants.

The only child of his who had children of his own, is Michael, who is adopted.

RR's 2 living children have none, and Maureen adopted a child.

So like George Washington, RR's genes have not been passed down either.

Horseshit.

The Dims had Ron Reagan, the GOP has Zell Miller!

Ol' Zell will give a stump-thumper of a speech, and make Dimocrat "consultants" everywhere wonder if they're just not living right!
