A Seattle doctor from Swedish Medical Center has been diagnosed with pertussis, commonly known as Whooping Cough.
Whooping cough has been highly controlled by vaccination, the DPT vaccine usually given to children. (Diptheria, Pertussis, Tetanus).
Still, there are about 7,000 cases in the US per year, resulting in about ten deaths.
Before the vaccine, there were about 200,000 cases per year, and 10,000 deaths.
It is a highly communicable bacterial disease that can be passed by the most casual contact, simply sitting next to a person who has it and breathing in the same air can infect you.
Young children are very much at risk.

Apparently. I did see a story on the news last night about someone getting athlete's foot at the public pool. Why didn't it occur to me broadcast it nation/world wide on FR?
Many children had adverse reactions to the initial DPT innoculations and the subsequent booster shots eliminated the P (Pertussis) from the vaccine.
Yeah, we've got it here in WI, too. Never thought of it as breaking news on the internet.

What are the symptoms? My dad has developed a terrible cough. He will not go see a doctor. I thought he may have lung cancer because he is a painter and works with all those chemicals. Now maybe there is a possibility he could have Whooping cough??

These diseases go around in circles. Pertussis was brought to the New World by the Europeans. Gee thanks LOL
