During the Clinton administration I was described jokingly by Insight Managing Editor Paul M. Rodriguez as "The Leper of the Democratic Party." Since then I have continued to be a renegade Democrat -- and I am now supporting the re-election of President George W. Bush. It started with Bill Clinton.
I had first met Clinton in 1975, when he was courting Hillary Rodham. Over the years my unfavorable impressions of him have increased.
In 1975 Hillary Rodham was working under my supervision on the Nixon impeachment staff of the House Judiciary Committee. As it was later described in the New York Times by Bernard Nussbaum, who became Clinton's White House counsel, when Hillary introduced Bill to us she said: "He's running for Congress. ... One day he's gonna become president."
Hillary had been recommended to Judiciary Committee Chairman Peter Rodino (D-N.J.) by Burke Marshall, her former professor at Yale Law. Marshall had served as assistant attorney general in the Kennedy administration. Later he became Kennedy's lawyer during the Chappaquiddick affair and his chief political strategist. With the advent of Watergate, Marshall had developed a plan to elect Ted Kennedy to the presidency in 1976. As a result, at Yale his students dubbed him: "The attorney general in waiting of the Camelot government in exile."
In 1975, Hillary hitched her political wagon to Marshall's rising star. Once on our staff she conferred regularly with Marshall, in violation of congressional rules against disclosure of confidential materials.

I have a feeling that there are quite a few renegades among our elected democrats. After all their vote for president is still confidential.

...My article resonated in the media...Ross Perot published a televised "infomercial" quoting from the article...the article came to the attention of Hillary. Under her orders a high-ranking White House staffer telephoned the law firm of which I had been a member...
I recall this very well. We were lucky to survive the "co-presidency."
I thought "Insight" had ceased publication.
Griffin Bell? This flew under my radar, but I'm sure others are aware of it. I pulled it from the article for those who didn't know of the endorsement.

No. I don't think she gave him any more then than she does now. I think it's appropos, as it indicates he dated her by taking her to court....
Excellent article. One of the truest comments is pandering to the lowest common denominator of the party. Hitlery and Bill were and are the same. That's exactly what they do.

How is this different than continuing to hold his nose? Does he walk into a convention and smell skunk? Do he see the people calling Bush Hitler? The black caucus blaiming Bush for racism and being told by "Rev." Al Sharpton that the black vote isnt for sale (isn't every vote really up for sale?? Thats the point of a campaign is it not?).
Now John Kerry is being supported by the C-USA (communists). If he has any sense of history he should be running from the DNC like a cat from water.
I can only believe you he politcally astute. How can he believe the party that continues to keep blacks on the plantation by false promises, feed the beast of extremist environmentalist and play hot potato with religion as if its practiced by the same number of people that are gay in this country?
His hope in the DNC is admiral but this is not the DNC he grew up with. It's led by socialist idealists with no principal. The ones with principal are left wondering where their party went.
Yes, I remember also; and with this;eperiencing a feeling of hope that maybe Justice would in fact catch up to the Clinton's. It did not however.
. . .and yes, we did survive the Clinton Presidency; but we surely knew after September 11; that many Americans did not.
(Interesting what followed for Mr. Zeifman stepping 'out-of-the-box' and taking a stand for 'integrity'. He has done it again; I am assuming he is retired. . .)
That may be too much to ask however; some of these folks, may still need friends.
Well, he makes it clear that he will vote for the better candidate -- it seems that he still wants to work from within the Democrat party to try and bring them back from the left's cliff edge.
Personally, I think that while well-intentioned, the effort is futile. I would not be surprised within 20 years to see a mass exodus of the more conservative Democrats to the Republican party, which would become a true centrist party in the US. The Democrat party would be a complete left-wing party, and the more conservative GOP members would probably migrate to a far-right coalition. We're already seeing some of this movement, but on a small scale.
