Reports in Kuwait on Friday said a man assumed to be Al Qaeda leader in Iraq, Abu Musab Zarqawi has been captured near the Syrian border.
Zarqawi, whose Tawhid and Jihad group has claimed responsibility for numerous attacks in Iraq, was captured during a joint operation by US forces and Iraqi police, Al Siyasah newspaper, quoting informed Iraqi sources, said Friday.
The US and Iraqi investigators are trying to identify the captive and has sent his DNA sample for testing, the unconfirmed report indicated.
Zarqawi is the most wanted suspect in Iraq and has a US bounty of $ 25million on his head. (albawaba.com)
Let's hope this turns out to be real this time.
This is identical to the story in Al Jazeera, pretty much word-for-word. Clearly AJ got the story from this Kuwaiti source.
...but damn I hope this is true.
The report has been denied. If it were true, enough time has passed that it would be confirmed. Film at eleven, etc.
I hope, if this turns out to be true, that the sample sent in was his head on a stick
It'a not unusual to hide a capture like this for as long as possible. Once it's known that he's been captured, lots of his contacts will disappear.
Won't even begin to believe it until I hear Dubya or Rummy on television announcing the capture
You can never tell. All the Arab media will report rumor (as does ours....now)
(P.S. Can I question him?)
Better to delay and be absolutely sure than to give the media a chance to turn a mistake into "Bush lied".
We'll have to wait and see if this turns out true - Obviously we all hope it does - that we finally nail Zarqawi - (both sources are terribly suspect though) -
If we don't get a confirmation or leak from a US site within the next couple hours...this is a fake - (only interesting note...it hasn't been denied yet either?) -
With that said, I think getting Zarqawi (Iraq) or Al Zawahiri (Afghanistan/Pak) will both cause a huge toll on Al Qeade - (these type leaders are very much needed for them to put together an effective terrorist campaign) -
Getting these guys will be a huge plus - especially 3 months down the road after getting them - (that is when the real results of killing off top leadership starts to show).
At Wendy's, taking a break from resuscitating frothing wet hamsters,
Candidate Kerry today said that Osama [and Zarqawi] deserve to be tried
in US Courts of law, with appointed lawyers and requisite media to help sort it out.
He said that by trying terrorists in US Courts it would ensure the 'fastest, surest route'
to stopping terrorism.
"I hope, if this turns out to be true, that the sample sent in was his head on a stick"
I like your DNA sample technique for terrorists - of any flavor.
mc
But just as has happened with the Hamas leadership, if you kill them off consistently it takes the wind out of the sails of the whole organization.
Do we get to feed him into a wood chipper feet first? Beheading from the bottom up. Televised on al-Jazeera and al-Arabiya, of course.
With a caption running across the bottom - what happens when you behead non-Muslims.
Hello Mr. positive. I guess it's all futile. Let's surrender now because we're all defeated.
Hello Mr. positive. I guess it's all futile. Let's surrender now because we're all defeated.
With all the hoopla raised by idiots in this country, the UN, etc. concerned over how the US treats captured terrorists, I'd rather that the U.S. have this scumbag in custody, and adamantly deny having him if word gets out. I'm ALL FOR doing WHATEVER IS NECESSARY to extract information from him, Bin Laden, and any other person responsible for 9-11. I make it a point to visit 9-11 memorial websites weekly to keep my anger fresh. We must never forget.
I remember one day last year it was all over the news ALL DAY that Bin Laden and/or his sons had been captured. The US government denied it and the story suddenly died. I often wonder if they really did get him. If keeping the rest of the world in the dark about his capture means they can do whatever they want to him with no reprisal, I say keep it a secret.
It's only more of the same.
I'd rather be skeptical than disappointed.
