IF THE American left has the outsize film-maker Michael Moore in its corner, the right has two slim, ferociously partisan blondes. Ann Coulter, a bestselling writer, and Laura Ingraham, a rising chat show star, stuck out like sore thumbs in Boston.
According to Coulter, their looks alone set them apart. In a column written for the USA Today newspaper she bragged that all the pretty girls were on her side and referred scornfully to the corn-fed, no-make-up, natural fibre, no-bra-needing, sandal-wearing, hirsute, somewhat fragrant hippie chick pie wagons they call women at the Democratic national convention.
Conservatives were having to deploy a series of covert signals to identify one another, much as gay men do, she added. My allies are the ones wearing crosses or American flags.
USA Today had thought that it wanted Coulters distinctive commentary. She has sold nearly 1m books, with titles such as Treason and Slander, about liberal lies. The newspaper has also hired Moore to write a left-wing column at the Republican convention.
However, Coulters prose proved to be too much for the papers editors, one of whom said about her jibe at female Democrats, Not funny, I dont get it, and the column was spiked.
It was not an attempt to censor her, the papers executive editor insisted; there was simply a difference of opinion over editing words, voice, that sort of thing.
Apparently, said Coulter, striking back, USA Today doesnt like my tone, humour, sarcasm, etc etc which raises the question of why they hired me to write for them in the first place.
She has a point. Shortly after the September 11 terrorist attacks, Coulter was dropped by the right-wing magazine National Review after she wrote that the correct response to terrorists was to invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. USA Today should have known what it was buying.
Coulters tirades have made her the mini-skirted pin-up of ultra-conservatives. Her strongest competition comes from Ingraham, another striking blonde who worked as a speech writer for Ronald Reagan just after she left university in the mid-1980s and now has a nationally syndicated radio show. She was a commentator on Fox television and CNN during last weeks convention.
During the convention she stayed at the same hotel as a group called Take Back America, sponsors with Moore of a Bushbashing rally. You dont have to go to a Michael Moore speech to feel the hatred raw, sheer, unmitigated hatred, she declared.
They dont hate the French. They dont hate Fidel Castro. They dont hate pornographers, or doctors who abort unborn children, or murderers sentenced to die. They have been saving all that hatred for Mr Bush.
A far cry from the stupid white men of Moore legend, Ingraham and Coulter are as crude as he is when it comes to fighting back. Ingraham derides John Edwards, the vice-presidential candidate, as a lightweight silky pony, trotting expectantly behind the dour John Kerry. She held a competition among radio listeners for the best Kerry theme song: Flipper or The Addams Family.
Despite this, Ingraham is less outrageous than Coulter. She has asked whether the war in Iraq justified its costs and whether Americans really are safer as a result, while insisting that Bush has no option but to stay the course. Coulter, by contrast, insists that things in Iraq are going magnificently. But the two are like soul sisters when the other is under attack.
Are you trying to divide us two blonde conservatives? Ingraham once asked a television host. Few would dare.
Ping!
She's got Chicklete Gum Teeth.
Words again! Aren't they always causing problems? If only Coulter hadn't used words, the article would've been just fine.
I like her radio show. She's so perfect it's almost sickening *LOL*
My wife is a blonde conservative. I love blonde conservatives!!
I think Crowley is the cutest of the three. .....and perhaps the sharpest.
There was also a short lived stint at the T&A network, MSNBC, where she quit over a dispute with producers over doing nude scenes when the "artitic merit" of MSNBC news didn't require it.
And how we all miss Barbara Olson. :( She was one of the "cadre" of conservative women who fought the garbage coming out of the Clinton administration, and was a lover of conservative values.
I hope Ann and Laura had security guards with them in Boston. I wouldn't put it past those wild eyed left wing nutcases to have tried something violent.
"Coulters tirades have made her the mini-skirted pin-up of ultra-conservatives."
Tirades? Ultra-conservatives? Why cant anyone give a straight report?
How about instead saying "Coulter has become the mini-skirted pin-up of Conservatives"
And by the way... I voted for Al Gore(please don't shoot me) and am only moderately conservative, yet I love Ann Coulter. So is anybody who likes her called "ultra-conservative"
Pie wagons? lol.
You voted for Al Gore?
That is just spewingly funny. And that is yet another seriously hot conserva-babe. And you posted a mention of Ann Coulter without pics.
I love girl fights.
Please!! Nobody interrupt!
I was a democrat until 2 years ago.
Oh boy hehehe talk about unwanted confessions ;-)
Depending upon your age....we may forgive you for voting for Al Gore......but, admitting that here could make for some interesting debates....LOL.
What's wrong with "chicklete gum teeth"? Hey the woman is gorgeous. There's nothing wrong with her being beautiful. Would you rather she have no teeth? I commend you on your originality...I've never heard the expression before...then again, my mind must not function like yours. You don't think she's an attractive woman?
