Israelis are generally satisfied with their lives, or are at least optimistic about their near future, the annual Demographic Survey of the Israeli population shows. The report was released Sunday by the Central Bureau of Statistics.

According to the 2004 statistical survey, 52% of Israelis expect their lives to improve in the next few years, 33% don't express their lives to change, and only 15% expect lives to worsen.

Evidently it is easier to please the young: 88% of people between the ages of 20-24 feel a sense of fulfillment from their lives, while 79% of people between the ages of 45-65 feel fulfilled.

Levels of fulfillment rise proportional to levels of education, the study found, and higher income levels contribute to fulfillment as well.

Nearly 90% of households in which monthly income is NIS 4000 or higher, reported feeling fulfilled, while in contrast, 73% of households earning a monthly income of around NIS 2000 reported a low level of fulfillment from their lives.

Close to half of the adult population is satisfied with their financial situation. 39% of Israelis foresee improvement in their financial situation in the next few years, while 24% foresee a turn for the worse.

Among Israelis 83% of the employed are satisfied with their line of work. 84% of Jews are satisfied, but only 76% of Arabs are satisfied.

Of the employed, 48% are satisfied with their income level - 49% among Jews but 45% among Arabs. Of the whole population, 17% are concerned that they'll lose their jobs within the year -16% of Jews and 21% of Arabs.

Of the adult population in Israel, 12% report having no friends, and 34% say they feel loneliness often. Women suffer from loneliness more often than men: 40% report feeling lonely compared to 27% of men.

3% of Jews do not speak any Hebrew at all, while 13% of Arabs do not speak any Hebrew. However, 79% of Jews do not speak any Arabic. Only 32% of people aged 20 and older don't know English at all: 29% of Jews and 52% of Arabs.

As more French and other EUropistan Jews emigrate to Israel, Israeli optimism levels will rise.
