DULUTH, Minn. - Rep. Tom Rukavina, DFL-Virginia, was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence.
Rukavina, 54, was arrested on Highway 169 in Mountain Iron at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday after deputies saw him driving erratically, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Department said in a news release.
He was cited for fourth-degree DUI after being given field sobriety tests. He took a blood-alcohol test at the county jail and registered 0.15.

Yes. Largely due to MADD's irrational need to raise money by demanding more strict laws. I remember an instance here where a man who tested in the .24 range killed some people with his car. MADD used that as an example of why we needed to reduce the limit to .08. Did your friend speak out against that or did she continue the campaign to raise money?
As long as the arrests pile up from people with the low levels the statistics look good and everyone is happy. Too bad that there isn't more effort to take the really dangerous drivers off the street until it's too late.

I got my DUI in Redwood City, CA. it was Thanksgiving '49, we'd had a company party and I was taking the bookkeeper home who lived in Palo Alto, I'd just passed Woodside Road (my turn off) and this guy pulled in front of me from a side street. I was exceeding the speed limit and hit the guy in the rear, totaled both cars; his was a '40 Plymouth coupe and mine was '34 Ford chopped and channeled three window coupe, with a full load 3/8"X3/8" flathead Ford engine. *sigh* :)
I think the fine was $150.00 and I lost my licence for a year.

At least there was an accident. Most DUI arrests don't even involve a traffic violation other than the drinking.
The real problem drivers don't even have a license anymore and continue doing it even after serving time.
Since the laws got so tough the arrest rate is way up, but there is no corresponding reduction in the % accident rate involving drinking. If the law was effective the accident rate should be down, shouldn't it?
In November 49 I was 5 years and 2 months from my debut. Sounds like a nice car though.

I don't know the statistics on drinking arrests and accident reductions ~ I don't read the local commie-rag newspaper.
It was a nice car, I've always liked high performance vehicles; quite a few of my motorcycles and cars/pickups have been in that category. :)
I'm driving an '01 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning pickup, it came with 380HP, I SuperChipped it and it now has 425HP ~ old guys like to go fast, too. :)

In 1980 persons between 16 and 20 years old accounted for 10 percent of licensed drivers but 15 percent of DUI arrestees. In 1996, this age group accounted for 7 percent of drivers and 8 percent of DUI arrestees.
In 1996 there were 17,126 alcohol-related traffic fatalities accounting for 40.9 percent of all traffic fatalities during the year. This is a 29 percent reduction from the more than 24,000 fatalities recorded 10 years earlier when alcohol was involved in 52 percent of the fatalities.
An estimated 32 percent of fatal accidents involved an intoxicated driver or pedestrian (the majority are drivers, however) with a blood alcohol concentration, or BAC, of at least 0.10 grams of alcohol per deciliter of blood, the most commonly used definition of intoxication.
I drive fast but not real fast. I am a private pilot too but I like slow puddle jumpers best.

What's the source? The numbers don't match the info I saw on a pamplet on national figures that the Alabama Dept of Public Safety published a couple of years ago.
