Actually, I never smelled anything, or saw any smoke. Pretty good NW breeze blowing today, and I'm NW of the fire.

Bingo, MM. Unfortunately these accidents are not all that rare.
Followup from local radio (WSB AM) is that a forklift operator hit and ruptured an ammonia pipe. It's just the usual warehouse carelessness, unfortunately. Sometimes they hit a sprinkler pipe . . . but sometimes it's something nasty like ammonia.
VC, my husband works about three miles cross-wind from this establishment. (I called him to make sure things weren't blowing his way.) He works for a chemical company, says he's glad they don't mess with ammonia much.

There are several chemical plants in that area.

The chemical companies and heavy manufacturing do seem to be clustered in a southerly arc from SW Fulton industrial area around 285/985 over to the east side. Although we used to live near a cluster of them farther north, around the Bolton Road area.
When the wind shifts round to the SE you sure know they are there! Not to mention the Bolton Road sewage treatment plant and the landfill just SW of there . . . < pheeew! >

Dang, not 985 . . . 675 - the SE bypass.
Too many numbers ending in "5" for this old line Atlantan to keep track of. I try to stay off the interstate system, 'cause the Yankees are all on there - it's the only way they know to get around. Which leaves the surface streets for the rest of us . . . :-D

Just drove home from work along Lower River road, which passes within 1/2 mile of the fire on the Douglas county side of the river....
Didn't even see any smoke. Fire department put a damper on that fire fast.
I used to work for the Fire Chief over the Fulton Industrial fire station. They are a professional group.

I used to work as a line boy at FTY.
I'm pretty sure that was the station that was on call for us in case of emergency.
They were indeed a very professional outfit (of course, this was 30 years ago . . . :-D )

A few more explosions could relly help clean up Fulton Industrial Boulevard. I'm sure the crackwhores won't mind at all.

oh, well - I did three years within spitting distance of Spaghetti Junction, so I can't really point fingers.
Is there any place in the MA area where traffic doesn't suck?
