Mandatory recycling is slavery (and government make-work).
You know when recycling makes economic sense when private entities are willing to pay you enough for your recyclables to make it worth your trouble.

It really is manmade work. My city has a recycling program and the trash and recylclables are hauled to another town 55 miles away. 2 years ago a story broke that all the recycle items were being dumped into the landfill there along with the regular garbage because they didn't want to spend the money on their end to hire the personnel to process the recyclables. Even after this story broke, we continue to recycle here in this town. Makes no sense.
