this is my favorite from that story:

Down the road in the park sat Vietnam veteran Gary Snyder, drinking Miller High Life. Snyder, who was among only a handful in Harborview who rode out the storm, said residents were anxious about looters, but he was prepared.

"If I see 'em, I'll shoot 'em," he said. "They're gone. I'll tell 'em I had a flashback."

I just read that Drudge Report a few moments ago. Lemme tell ya, after Hurricane Andrew when I volunteered with the FLARNG (no pay, no points) but they verified my experience with ARPERCEN they happily took me aboard. I was made S3 Air and began coordinating chopper assets and air missions. Got my own "bird," too. Tons of fun. One of those unpublicized missions was to insert a Special Forces A-Team into the disaster area. Their mission was to: 1. Find survivors and have them extracted. Kill starving cattle and feral animals and have THEM taken out of the area and finally should they stumble across any looters, they were allowed to ummmm "neutralize" any threats. Live ammo, folks. You savvy what the army means when they issue a "neutralization" order? I actually never heard from them again, because before I could have them extracted, I had to go back to work for real. The summer of fun was over. But did you catch that news item about the big refridgerator trucks in this current disaster area? Well, they were around after Andrew, too. Strictly low profile. I also know for a fact that more than a few homeowners capped some bad guys engaged in looting activities. And the gang elements were able to rip off the 82nd Airborne for something like 16 full auto M-16 rifles! That's another story.
