I actually in my heart would like to believe that the reason all of this happened was that he just could not bear letting her down, and that maybe he wanted to kill himself afterwards and just chickened out. He should of though, then his family would not have to deal with the pain of looking at him everyday in a cell.
If he absolutely had to kill someone, he should have offed himself.
