What do you think the chances are that the union will come to his defense?

He was wrong. AMTRAK probably has rules about this sort of thing.

As much as I agree with his politics, I think this was an appropriate move. I'd be annoyed if I was sitting in the train, the delay was caused by Bush, and I had to listen to a conductor make an anti-Bush remark. Politics and work don't mix unless it's your company.

Kerry's campaign is a train wreck itself.

I love watching this implosion, and the derailment is so completely fitting after the esteemed Senator's unbelievably self serving track record.

Gosh I also love the opportunity to use good puns.

Yes, with Michael Dukakis serving as the vice chairman of Amtrak's governing board, I'm sure there are rules against disparraging comments about Democrats and Massachusetts liberals.

Probably about 100%, depending.

Depends primarily on his past behavior and previous instances of discipline. If this was the first offense in the last 6 (or 9 or 12 or whatever number-of-months they specify in their contract), he’ll be “made whole” and that’ll be the end of it.

That, because you (usually) have to go through a system of progressive discipline, and that starts with a warning, but can be elevated, depending on severity of offence. Starting discipline at suspension w/o pay would be something the union would grieve no matter what his politics were.

If he’s done this type of thing before (recently, and been disciplined for it), then he better get wise and learn not to be a smart-ass because the next step after being suspended without pay is usually termination.

Yeah, I agree with you in principle, but: Do you really think that if a conductor in, say NY, made an anti-Bush comment, that there would be any repercussions? So...while I would agree with you in an ideal (or even fair) world, I only agree if the enforcement is symmetric. I don't believe it is.

I would be interested to see if the fact that he's a Republican will make a difference. I would guess "Yes."
