American aircraft struck the Iraqi holy city of Najaf last night, hours after military vehicles toured its streets calling for militants to leave the city or die.
As fighting raged in Shia strongholds across the south, US troops trying to recapture the centre of Najaf called in air strikes against Shia militiamen who have taken up defensive positions in the city's cemetery.

After dusk, US warplanes flew sorties over the city, the spiritual focal point of the rebellion, and rained bombs on the ancient graveyard.
Earlier in the day, helicopters strafed positions held by the Mahdi army of the cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.
In Basra, calm returned a day after the death of a British soldier in an ambush by Sadr's fighters.
Residents in the town said shops had re-opened and both British soldiers and the Mahdi army appeared to have withdrawn their men from the streets.
Meanwhile, a row was simmering between London and Copenhagen last night after Denmark's military contingent in southern Iraq said it would no longer hand over prisoners to British forces commanding the region.
A Danish defence ministry spokesman said the decision had been taken after Iraq reintroduced capital punishment on Sunday.
It was feared that prisoners who were handed over to the Iraqis could face execution.
Cry me a frikkin' river.
Would a daisy cutter work on a cemetary?
It was feared that prisoners who were handed over to the Iraqis could face execution.
And they say there's no good news.......

Most of the flowers at a cemetary are already "cut." 8^>
What's that I hear? "Puff, the Magic Dragon..."
Seems the Danes don't honor the cultural diversity that makes us this great planet of ours.
The Denmark force should pull out for their own safety. THe insurg have them marked for wussies by now.

Scheezopetes,! at least they have a trial, with the islamofasist they cut your head off and "praise allah "that they were so brave.....
Well, the Danish sure know how to make a lasting impression hugh. God forbid a terrorist be executed. What a laughing stock!
Or even worse, be forced to wear panties on their heads.

I sure hope the Danes are using rubber bullets. I'd hate to see them actually hurt someone serious.
Agreed. That would make about as much sense, LOL.
It's OK. We're dropping holy bombs to give them holy Hell for housing such a holy terror as al-Sadr. And the press can kiss my holy butt.
I say from now all all executed Jihadi's in the region shall be slain by having womens undergarments placed upon their heads right before they are sawed off with a dull knife and then their entrails shall be fed to the swine.
And as to the Dane's. Tell both of them to go home now.
I'll bet it probably wouldn't even disturb the "residents."
Nope!
We should stand up and tell them to get the hell out and leave their equipment for the men & women who are willing to actually pull the trigger.
So, does the Danish army use only nonlethal weapons?
