ya and we would have just lost those lame southern ones which we don't really need anyway.
LOL.
This entire thread is about opinions. Hell, much of what goes on at FR in general is about opinions. That, my friend, IS a fact.
Is it my "opinion" that the founders envisioned a Union consisting of all the states?
Hardly.
Is it my "opinion" that contemporary Americans conceive of their country as an organic whole?
Hardly.
Good article. You're right. George W. Bush will be considered one of the greatest President of the United States.
Lincoln was one of the greatest President. He preserved the Union and banned slavery.
It is my opinion that Lincoln was a control freak, he would make a perfect demo'rat today, and shouldn't be included in the short list of greatest presidents.
You know where to look for the best part of this thread...
Folks, I hope you're right about this. Before we put that much weight of expectation on GW's shoulders, we have to recognize that democracy in the ME, peace in Israel, and the end to terror is a really tall order.
Lincoln was one of the greatest President. He preserved the Union and banned slavery.
Just FYI, it happened again.
I saw that thread-title, and thought: "That sounds like a The Wizard title!"
You have a style, and I'm onto it!

Please expound on your dumb statement, newbie!
I'm not too fond of Lincoln either.
I hope GWB next term will revert this nation to state and individual independance from federal government. He is allowing states to defend the border as we speak, he wants medicare and SS to be individual owned. Soo Washington started the nation, Lincoln destroyed it, and GWB put it back. Lets hope the IRS and INS go away and states can protect the USA!!!
The emancipation proclamation freed no one. The southern states had seceeded from the union (a right all states took as given by the way). As such, the union had no authority over the southern states, that is until they were forced back "into the fold" by military force. I can see Washington and Bush 43 in 25 years as being the great ones, but including lincoln is reprehensible.
See "THE REAL LINCOLN" Thomas DiLorenzo for information on just how much damage 16 did to the constitution!
Well, you're entitled to it.
Lincoln, like any other President, was a man not an angel.
I just look at the the situation he confronted and the stupid, cowardly or incompetent reactions of other statesmen.
Buchanan didn't do anything - just pretended there was no crisis.
Seward thought it would be a good idea to stir up a war with either France or Britain in the hopes that the South would forget about the crisis and unite with the unseceded states in a common front against the Europeans.
McClellan thought that he could reunite the country by waiting and whiling away the time drilling troops on the parade ground.
Lincoln was hard-nosed, singleminded and pursued his strategy of taking the fight to the CSA until his superior numbers and resources prevailed.
He threw everything he had at the problem and was not afraid to make mistakes as long as he was striving towards the goal.
And I don't think that Lincoln, like today's Democrats, would have tried to get permission from the French before aggressively going after terror. He would have gone after Al-Qaeda. He would have gone after Saddam Hussein.
You Lincoln hating crackers give this whole forum a bad name.
As for Dubya, I will someday proudly call him, "The Abraham Lincoln of the Middle East."
LOL
figure it out yourself.
PS newbie...ouch that really cuts to the bone :)
He has achieved several victories in less than 3 years: Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and Saudi Arabia aren't terrorist sanctuary now. In addition, Lybia has stopped his WMD program.
