NEW JERSEY GOVERNOR JIM McGREEVEY ENDORSES SENATOR JOHN KERRY FOR PRESIDENT

Paramus, New Jersey – New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey today endorsed Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry for President of the United States. McGreevey was joined at a press conference in Dunkerhook Park by Senator Jon Corzine, Rep. Bill Pascrell, and other New Jersey Democratic leaders.

“I am endorsing Senator John Kerry because he can beat George Bush on the issue of national security and on the important economic issues facing working families. Senator Kerry will take the fight directly to George Bush, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, and the entire out-of-touch Bush team,” said McGreevey. “While Senator Kerry has established a long record of putting working families first, George W. Bush is out-of-touch with the economic pressures faced by everyday families and has the worst job loss record of any president since Herbert Hoover.”

Governor McGreevey said that President Bush’s failure on important issues is made all the more stark when compared to the progress that Democrats in New Jersey have proved is possible.

“While we have increased funding for education in New Jersey, President Bush has shortchanged our state’s schools and under-funded his own education program by billions of dollars,” said McGreevey. “While we are doing more for our veterans in New Jersey, President Bush is cruelly under-funding their health care. While we are doing more for New Jersey seniors, President Bush is reducing their choice of doctors and medicines. And while New Jersey has the most vigorous crackdown on corporate polluters in our state’s history, President Bush has under-enforced and gutted our nation’s environmental laws every chance he has gotten.”

Senator Corzine and Congressman Pascrell - two previously announced Kerry supporters - stood with McGreevey as he announced his endorsement. With the governor’s endorsement came the endorsement of Congressman Frank Pallone, Democratic County Chairs from 20 counties, 21 state and county Democratic elected officials and New Jersey’s three Democratic National Committee delegates.

“This is an important step forward on the road to John Kerry winning the White House in November,” said Senator Corzine. “Governor McGreevey's endorsement today means Democrats in New Jersey will go into battle in the fall united behind a candidate with a strong record of leadership on issues that matter to New Jersey voters: creating jobs, health care, education, the environment, homeland security, and national security. The support and enthusiasm for Senator Kerry in this state and throughout the country just keeps growing.”

The Governor emphasized that Democrats in New Jersey would unite strongly behind the Democratic nominee, and the Democratic nominee would unite the country around common ideals.

“The Republicans are focusing on wedge issues – appealing to the lowest common denominator in order to divide Americans and slip into the White House for another four years,” said McGreevey. “This Democratic Party will be united and energized because we know that America cannot afford another four years of George W. Bush in the White House. We know that improving education, the environment, and the economy is a common goal for the vast majority of Americans, and in this campaign we will unite our country behind these principles.”

And Presidential Democratic hopeful John Kerry is letting former Sen. Robert Torricelli raise money for him less than two years after the Senate formally rebuked Torricelli for his actions with a political donor.

Wonder if all the backdoor handouts to his good friend Toricelli will be OFF the table now.

Think I'll call Lautenberg's office in the morning and ask if he was McGreevy's lover.

Kerry had his aide, Ben Dover, negotiate for McGreevey's endorsement.

“The Republicans are focusing on wedge issues – appealing to the lowest common denominator. . .

Something about which he obviously knows plenty.
