Both wives stay in his corner (Divorce records sealed)
New York Daily News ^ | 8/13/04 | CORKY SIEMASZKO

The first Mrs. McGreevey is a shy librarian from British Columbia. The second is a political dynamo from Newark who actively campaigned for her husband.

But both Kari Schutz and Dina Matos stood by their man yesterday.

"She supports Jim with her entire heart," said McGreevey's first mother-in-law, Agnes Schutz.

Matos literally stood beside McGreevey when he publicly came out of the closet and tendered his resignation. She did not make any remarks, but she smiled and held his hand when he finished his shocking confession.

McGreevey met his first wife on a cruise in 1990 and was instantly smitten.

"I was in love with her from the moment I met her," McGreevey said in a 1997 interview. "She's the only woman I've ever wanted to marry."

They got married in Canada and moved into a condominium in Woodbridge, N.J. - and then McGreevey ran for mayor. He won, and their daughter, Morag, was born in 1992.

A proud papa, McGreevey often brought Morag with him to City Council meetings. But Kari could not handle being a political wife and was homesick and missed her mother, who was ill at the time.

Fed up and lonely, Kari packed up her daughter and went home just before Christmas 1994 for a visit - but didn't come back. In divorce papers filed the next year, Kari claimed McGreevey was using their daughter as a political prop and was too ambitious to be a good husband.

In his legal response, McGreevey insisted he was a good husband and father who found time to "read to his young daughter, to play horsey, sit with her in the sandbox."

The McGreevey divorce in 1997 ended up being amicable and Kari agreed to let Morag, now 11, visit him in New Jersey several times a year. But McGreevey, with Kari's approval, also took the unusual step of sealing the divorce records.

The Daily News discovered the records were sealed in August 2001, when rumors about McGreevey's alleged homosexual affair with an aide first began circulating.

Agnes Schutz insisted McGreevey's homosexuality played no role in the divorce.

"It was the stress of his political life that led to the divorce," Schutz said. "Kari and Jim remained friends and we are all keeping him in our prayers."

McGreevey met Matos at a political fund-raiser around the time of his divorce. Born in Portugal and reared in Newark's Ironbound section, Matos was a flack for a Newark hospital who led voter registration drives and served on the planning board in Elizabeth, N.J.

They were married four years ago in Washington and danced on the rooftop deck of the Hay-Adams Hotel, with the White House in the background. His best man was James Kennedy, a three-term Democratic mayor of Rahway, who was also his best man when he married Kari.

McGreevey and Matos had a daughter, Jacqueline, now 2. And the handsome young family appeared together in a series of New Jersey tourism commercials. But Matos let her husband do the talking and stopped wearing red, her favorite color.

"I enjoy getting involved with wonderful causes," she told a reporter. "But I'd rather be behind the scenes."

"Agnes Schutz insisted McGreevey's homosexuality played no role in the divorce."

Of course not, it was the young cabana boy in their bed everynight what did the marriage in.

I find this story very sad..A reporter this a.m. said that McGreevey felt sad about the grief all this has caused his wife and family but was proud of his homosexuality. If this is true, will someone please explain to me how one's sexual identification can be a cause for pride.

McGreevey is a sexual pervert. But now that's his problem and his spouses'. Its politically irrelevant.

The new problem is his successor, Senator Codey a real wacko left-wing liberal if there ever was one.

Codey is rabidly anti-gun, opposes bear hunts, and gets involved with weird projects like having himself committed to an insane asylum to check out patient abuse. (Too bad they let him out.)

That's the kind of wacko who will be succeeding McGreevey in November. My suspicion is the Dems will run somebody else - Corzine (sort of ryhmes with "Poison") next year.

Corzine or "Moneybags", a former partner in Goldman-Sachs brokerage and currently the liberal Senator from Jersey is loded, bright and a far leftist feal good liberal in the best traditions of his predecessors. He can do FAR more damage in the State governorship than in the Senate where is merely one voice out of 100. And with his money and brains, he is head and shoulders above the dimwits who run the New Jersey State Republican Party. He'll probably have them all jumping through hoopes for him when he's in the state house.

So actually, pervert McGreevey wasn't such a bad thing. He was a good target next year - which is precisely why the Dems muscled him out in one of the states they own lock, stock and barrel (excuse the gun metaphor).

Let's see, Jack Ryan and his wife didn't want their divorce records unsealed for engaging in flamingly heterosexual relations, which tubed his candidacy, but McGreevy's sexual orientation is the worst-kept secret in politics; which one does the press keep secret? Ah, yes, the "unbiased" media keeps the corrupt one's image intact, while blithely ignoring his greater scandals to the detriment of NJ citizens.

Gad, the way things are going in this country, the Episcopal church will probably make McGreevey a bishop based on what he did to his wife and children.

I wish someone asked him why he was proud of liking sex with men. Maybe I've missed it, but I haven't yet heard anyone say they are proud they like heterosexual sex.

Didn't Gephardt also say he was proud his daughter was a lesbian? Or was that some other politician?

MCGreevey's wife must really be a doormat to stand by him. Reminds me of some of the battered wives and Hillary.

I disagree with a statement in the article: I would never describe McGreevey as "handsome." What a sleazy man.

Who the hell names a little girl "Morag".

Morag = The Great One It appears to be Scottish in origin.

Sounds like something Lt. Worf would name his daughter.

Anytime I hear , "The Great One" , I think of Jackie Gleason.

He is disqualified from the Catholic church because apparently he likes adult males.
