WAS THE HARDBALL SEGMENT WITH O'NEILL A SETUP

Posted on 08/13/2004 10:41:24 AM PDT by Protect the Bill of Rights

COULD THIS HAVE BEEN A SET UP FROM THE VERY BEGINNING?

I did not expect Matthews to agree with O'Neill, not by any stretch of the imagination. But I always thought Chris could rise above partisanship when truth was at stake.

I've been thinking since the broadcast.

Facts:

  1. 1. Matthews did nothing but recite the democrat talking points. (http://msnbc.msn.com/id/5694561/)
  2. Matthews challenged O'Neill's every statement. Fine. I expected that. But he not once challenged Hurley's presentation of facts.
  3. Matthews was senior aide to Tip O'Neill
  4. Matthews attended Holy Cross
  5. Was Matthews was born/raised in Boston, can anyone confirm or deny?
  6. Kerry, of course, is from Mass.
  7. Hurley is an attorney who works in Boston
There are many John Hurley's who are attorneys in the Boston area, so I have not been able to find out where he went to school, backgound, etc.

Chris Matthews was unlike anything I have ever seen, even for him. I am making no accusations..... To answer that question, more info is needed. Can anyone contribute?

Matthews son campaigned for Howard Dean -- it made Chris proud.

I believe Matthews is from Philadelphia.

You're too generous.

Chris' flying spittle during the John O'Neill segment is an indication of just how explosive and effective the swiftees story is, and of just how warped and partisan much of the media is. This is a case study in news media bias.

Chris Matthews is originally from Philadelphia. He went to Holy Cross, joined the Peace Corps, then worked a while as a policemen at the Capitol in DC.

I think you're on to something with the Tip O'Neil link.

C'mon, Matthews is a liberal and "Hardball" only applies to conservatives. "Softball" should be the name of his show when liberals are interviewed.

Enough of the Catholic bashing. I am a Catholic Republican and I get tired of the "He went to Holy Cross" which implies that all Catholics are liberals.

Not only that, Matthews constantly talked over O'neill every time O'Neill tried to answer an accusation.

But, as far as your comment that you've never seen matthews like that -- he is like that all the time. I caught a portion of his discussion the previous night with two pundits about the various merits of Laura Bush vs. Teresa Heinz and whether they were assets to their husbands -- it was just disgusting. Matthews did not have one nice thing to say about Laura Bush. He discussed that lovely lady as if she were a nothing and described Teresa's antics as lively, interesting, etc.

I just won't watch him any more. He makes me sick.

Are you kidding? Of course the guy is biased. It's plain as day. This story is the biggest whitewash I've ever seen. The brazenness reaches new levels every day.

Look, they brought out both Carville and Lanny Davis in a tag team shoutdown against O'Neill on another show. These are the top-shelf Dem goons working on this one. They realize the SS Kerry is taking on water, and it's all hands on deck for the libs right now. No time for integrity, there's an election to win.

Lookie here - from John Fund on March 29th:

http://www.opinionjournal.com/diary/?id=110004881

Not so fast. Mr. Kerry's campaign has done more than contradict itself. It has been in full coverup mode. John Musgrave, one of the six witnesses who placed Mr. Kerry at the Kansas City meeting, says the head of Veterans for Kerry, John Hurley, called him twice and pressured him to change the story he had already told a Kansas City Star reporter about the 1971 meeting.

According to Mr. Musgrave, Mr. Hurley told him that the senator "was definitely not in Kansas City." The New York Sun reports that Mr. Musgrave, who received three Purple Hearts in Vietnam, told Mr. Hurley that "I remember what I remember." Mr. Hurley then said, "Why don't you refresh your memory and call that reporter back?" Mr. Hurley says he thinks Mr. Musgrave is mistaken and was simply insisting Mr. Musgrave be very sure of his recollection. "I would apologize to John Musgrave if he thought in any way I was pressuring him," he told the Kansas City Star.

It's always a setup when a Democrat opponent is a guest on one of these shows.

Just imagine a show with a Republican host treating Hillary Clinton like O'Neill was treated. I know, there are no Republican hosts, and HRC never appears anywhere that isn't totally scripted, but just pretend.

The outrage from the media over the rude, disrepectful treatment would be deafening. But it's just normal behavior when a non-Democrat is the guest.

This is the state of journalism in America these days and it needs to be addresses or we can expect this kind of fair treatment for the rest of our and our childrens lives.

Found a little Hurley stuff, bet you can get more...

John Hurley is the National Director of Veterans for Kerry and has been working full time as a volunteer in John Kerry's presidential campaign for over a year. An attorney, Hurley is a Vietnam veteran who served with the U.S. Army in the Mekong Delta in 1967-1968. He was a Platoon Leader in Company B, 69th Engineer Battalion. He is 61 and lives in Wellesley, Massachusetts with his wife, Anne Goggin, and their three children, Caitlin, Conor, and Julia. His passions are family, Cape Cod, and the Boston Red Sox.

This has become the MO of virtually every talking-head show on cable. It's why I've stopped watching most of them. Carville did the same thing to O'Neill on CNN last night. O'Reilly does the same thing to everyone on his show. Everyone does it to everyone on Hannity and Colmes.

This should be the height of viewership for shows like "Spitball." I wonder how Hissy-fit Matthews' rating are doing. I'd love to see about two-thirds of the cable talking-head shows bite the dust after the election.

But this time he was over the top--even for him. It went beyond the pale. I have watched many of his rants, this was full of the anger and venom we have seen from the left towards President Bush.

Either he & Hurley (or someone else from the Kerry Camp) planned this full frontal assault on O'Neill or Chris has a serious anger management problem.

Forget the bias angle, we all know that is there.
I suspect collusion.

What I thought was bizarre was Matthews claiming that O'Neill spoke for 20 minutes. It's an open joke that Matthews will not let anyone speak ... even people he agrees with. He asks the question, you get out a sentence and he interupts with another question. O'Neill should have pointed that out to him.

Also Matthews claimed it was an old trick conservatives use to say that they didn't have a chance to speak.

Matthews is a moron. He has tailored his show to liberals in the last couple of years.

I read the transcript, but I'll never watch again.

You are right...I expected Chris to be more fair..why
did he bring up Bush? He was bashing Bush instead of
allowing O'Neil to get his points out..then Chris used the Navy way of doing things..to justify any point that was
made by O'Neil relating to the P-Hearts and the fact
that he put three together real fast to get his a$$ out of Vietnam..and then the real damage he did to the fighting
men- still there when he was trashing the war...Matthews
stayed clear of that..hell- when you compare the 50,000
names on the wall..how many were killed after Kerry was on his self serving crusade against the war...and Bush is
fighting for our freedom from terrorists...with thousands less in casualties....Chris is going down the tubes.. Jake

Chris Matthews has a large presence on the TV stage. His character and his judgement of other Demorat characters is in serious question, IMO.

Doesn't his draft evasion veering into the Peace Corps need to be brought to the top of the heap to show the fence-sitters just who is hammering the Swift Boat Vets?
Everyone is a liar who ever supported or served in the Military? I am sick of this perversion which seems to continue unchallenged by any Republican.
Partisan is one thing. Did ONLY Republicans serve in the military in the last 60 years in the USA??? I seriously doubt it. Shouldn't Democrats who loyally served iun the many branches of the Military be offended by the nastiness of Matthews and his ilk? I expect such foaming at the mouth from James Carville. He has shown his serpent colors for years.

Paraphrasing here:

Near the close of the show, Chris "The Screamer" was filibustering the Dem talking points in O'Neill's face, obviously walking/working the clock so as to prevent any rebuttal from O'Neil, while planning to give the "Last Word" to the Kerry Kamp Dude.

When O'Neill called Matthews on his ploy, saying, "you intentionally won't give me the time to respond with the truth you don't want heard", Chris angrily quipped, "that's a tactic and complaint always used by conservatives when on my show..." and continued to filibuster until "passing the baton" to the Kerry dude.

Hell yes it was a setup! And Matthews "self-outed" himself (again) as a biased part of the LIBERAL agenda media machine.

Yes, the hardball show was a setup. But the Dem goons can't stop people from buying and reading the book "Unfit for Command." As people read the book and discuss it, there will be a slow but steady erosion of support for Kerry and a large number of swing voters will decide to vote for Bush because Kerry is thoroughly dishonest. O'Neill does a great job of being honest, factually correct, and relatively non-partisan. Kerry is toast.

I noticed what Chris was doing toward the end of the show too. It made me so mad, I had to e-mail Chris to point this out.

Here is what I sent:

"Chris, I was appalled at your hypocritical treatment of John O’Neill during your interview. When it appeared Mr. O’Neill was making great points in the debate about the way John Kerry received his medals, I noticed you launched into your “rude interrupting, ask many questions in a row, and then answer them yourself” mode. Then when Mr. O’Neill began to protest this tactic, you contemptuously accused him of using a conservative tactic. The way I saw it, you were using the tactics. Your liberal tactic of suppressing the truth reminds me of a little kid putting their fingers in the ears and saying “blah, blah, blah” I can’t hear you."

Sure it was all setup. I watched it. Matthews had things he wanted to say. And he said them. John O'Neill could just as well have been in the men's room.

Matthews was painting O'Neill as some guy who has been "after Kerry" for 30 something years. A total lie. O'Neill has kept away from Kerry. He's been asekd many times over the years to come out against Kerry but has not until "now". And he would have come out earlier if not for his wife's illness.

Chris Matthews is no more a journalist that George Stephanopoulos is. Matthews is a punk. I'll never ever ever watch him again. Or Bill O'Reilly. Another punk!

The media tit that Matthews, Stephanopoulos, O'Reilly and Carville suck on is drying up. FreeRepublic is the new media.

Matthews is responsible for the accelerated dumbing down of politics and talk shows. If it weren't for this vicious hack the Carvilles in the world couldn't have emerged.

Matthews was also actively in support of communism throughout the cold war. Now, he loves to talk about how "we" won.

He's stupid, unstable, and has a problem with alcohol. Dumb conservatives like him because he hated Clinton. That was all personal. To the extent that he has an ideology, he's still hard left.
