Your dad is correct. They can always call you back if your particular expertise is needed.

Very few of those IRR called back have requested an exemption.

During the first Gulf War a neighbor went back who was an engineer in his 50s.

My dad is ALWAYS correct (just ask him, he'll tell you!) :-D

There aren't very many Chemical officers either (esp. since for awhile they melded them into Ordnance - that experiment didn't last long though), so whenever things looked interesting on the international scene we began to speculate when we would get The Letter . . . but we never did.

They did call my father in law (another WWII OCS type like my dad, Signal Corps and then Army Air Force) back early in the 'Nam years, he eventually retired as a bird colonel.
