Corruption vs. playing the gay card
MiamiHerald.com ^ | Aug. 18, 2004 | CAL THOMAS

Add ''gayness'' to patriotism and religion as a final refuge for scoundrels. In a remarkable announcement last Thursday, Democratic New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey said that he would resign his office after the November general election because pressure associated with his homosexuality would not allow him to effectively do his job.

Disgraced black political figures have long played the race card to deflect criticism about wrongdoing. Some Republicans have wrapped themselves in the flag or religion for the same reason. Now we have a governor playing the ''gay card,'' garnished with a little religion -- a twofer in the self-justification Olympics.

McGreevey is indictable -- figuratively and possibly literally -- for plenty of things that have nothing to do with his sexual practices or his religion. Corruption was not invented in New Jersey, or by McGreevey, but it has found a bipartisan home there.

• Start with McGreevey's reputed ''lover,'' Golan Cipel, who claims not to be gay and that he was sexually harassed by the governor. McGreevey put him on the state payroll with a six-figure salary to look after homeland security, despite Cipel's having no qualifications for the job.

Cipel is an Israeli citizen and does not have the proper security clearances to access classified documents. McGreevey aides say that Cipel tried to get $50 million as a ''cash settlement'' from the governor as well as his approval for a private medical college in the state.

The closing line in the editorial says it all:

New Jersey needs a political exorcism, but in a state run by a Democrat machine, who can effectively play the integrity card?

I am so incensed that the public and gay activists are viewing this man as a hero.

The only "public" that would think McGreevey is a hero, is the same "public" who supported Clinton getting a BJ from a White House Intern, while talking on the phone. That public lives in the gutter.

Meanwhile, McGreevey's love partner is back in Israel.

Israeli Golan Cipel, second from left, who is at the center of New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey's resignation, is followed by reporters as he arrives at his apartment Rishon Letzion, Israel, Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004. McGreevey resigned last week after announcing that he is gay and that he has had an affair with a man

Israeli Golan Cipel (C) arrives at his parent's house in the city of Rishon Letzi'on, August 17, 2004. Cipel, who claims he was a victim of repeated sexual advances by New Jersey Governor James McGreevey, returned back to his parent's home to rest ahead of a planned sexual harassment legal battle

Thomas is dead on. This story, despite the Media firestorm world-wide, is *NOT* about a homosexual coming out to his constituents. It's about *CORRUPTION*.

Anyone know what Cipel's explanation for how he got the job has been? Was it supposed to be a means to allow McGreevy access to him to perpetuate this alleged sexual harrassment? Why did he accept a position he had to know he wasn't qualified for?

.
THE LIST OF CORRUPTION surrounding McGreevey:

Start with McGreevey's reputed ''lover,'' Golan Cipel, who claims not to be gay and that he was sexually harassed by the governor.

• Then there is William D. Watley. He resigned as secretary of the Commerce and Economic Growth Commission during an investigation into his former chief of staff and because of a possible conflict of interest surrounding an $11.5 million government loan (which was ultimately canceled) for construction at the church where Watley is pastor.

• Roger Chugh, a McGreevey campaign aide in 2001, was appointed assistant secretary of state but resigned amid accusations that he offered special government treatment to businesses and also threatened businesses as ways of raising campaign contributions.

• David D'Amiano, a Democratic fund-raiser, is another person connected to McGreevey who has been accused of such practices. D'Amiano has been indicted on charges that he offered a farmer government favors in exchange for $40,000 in campaign contributions.

• Both Gary Taffet, McGreevey's chief of staff, and Paul Levinsohn, the governor's chief counsel, resigned, and a federal grand jury is investigating whether their billboard company benefited financially from their government connections. Taffet has also been charged with insider trading by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Although Cipel claims he is straight, the local news around here is reporting that a college professor in NJ has come out and said that he, too, had an affair with Cipel.

Did the college Professor give Cipel a job and put him on the taxpayers payroll? CORRUPTION CLEAR AND SIMPLE.

I don't know. The media was saying that it casts doubt on Cipel's claim that he's straight.

SIX FIGURE SALARY AT THE TAX PAYERS EXPENSE TO PAY FOR MCGREEVEY'S "LOVE INTEREST".... IT IS NOT GOING TO WASH.

The closing line is also inaccurate.

Republicans in New Jersey are no less corrupt than Democrats (see Donald DiFrancesco as Exhibit #1 in this case).

Whenever McGreevey ends up stepping down or getting dragged out in shackles, this state will have had six governors since George W. Bush was elected President. Four of them were not elected -- they assumed power when the sitting governor left office.

I doubt he is straight too, so what we really have is corruption.

Why did he accept a position he had to know he wasn't qualified for?

If his real job was gathering information relative to Homeland Security and sensitive facilities/locations for his Israeli handlers....well then he was absolutely 100% qualified for that task.

Personally, I think McG was strongarmed/blackmailed into giving Cipel that particular position.

That this very possiblly planted spy was allowed to leave American soil is a disgrace that borders on criminal negligence by both Joisey and Federal authorities. Those with oversite responsibilities in those areas should be immediately fired.

Tinkerbell Jim learned the tactic from Willie and added the fairy wrinkle himself.

Willie jumped on Monica like he has been jumping on women for years, as a diversion. It shifted all attention from his criminal connections with Saddam and the Iraqis and the money he took to keep OBL alive and free. Who would have thought that, instead of getting a pat on the make for getting a little in the Oval Office, he'd get an impeachment rial in the Senate.

McGreevey, just like his hero, has no intention of leaving office. Right after the election, he'll announce that the swell of popular opinion has urged him to saty on and finish the peoples' work that he started. He'll also pay off the usual media hacks and the will acclaim his brave act. Does anyone believe that the fairies at the NYT will have a tough time saluting the ultra-liberal fairies in Trenton?
